Make sure you back up your work. Saved my ass today. All I was doing was printing my manuscript, and the printer burped, and I'm getting an error message that Windows has encountered a problem and needs to shut down Word.

No big deal. So I start it up again, and it asks me if I want to attempt to recover my file. I did, and all that was there was garbage. The whole frakking file was corrupted!

Thank God I backup a copy on the hard drive, and one on a flash drive daily. Plus one on a CD-RW weekly.

I would hate to lose what I've worked on for a whole year.

Back up people.

That is my PSA, thank you.

it's very, very true. :) Good advice, my husband makes sure we back up regularly, Bless him.

Most of my works have been emailed to myself two or ten times. I have a few things here at work right now that aren't updated at home, but it's only a few minutes work (I haven't done muych writing in the last few months), so I wouldn't terribly mind losing it.

But yes, I agree about backing things up.

Yes, backing up is good.
I've been caught out twice so far.

Still without my lappie.....waiting for my son to try and reinstall everything.....unfortunately no recovery system I know of will recover lost files.........including hundreds of photographs ( :( ) and all my writing wips. *sigh*

Do yourself a favor: Mozy. You get 2GB of backup encrypted space. It's free, automatic and fabulous.

Sorry just drooling at EL and Mat's AVs.

Good God women what are you doing to us?

I'm glad I was helpful. I haven't needed Mozy yet for reasons that my laptop crashed, but I'm certainly glad it's there in case it does since previously, I did lose work on another piece of shit computer (Gateway, ME version).

Not that I'm bitter or anything. ;)

A good backup is a computer geeks best friend! Perhaps I overdo it, external hard drive has one backup of the entire computer, thumb drive has all my documents, and when all else fails, a hard copy is available, just scan it back in.

I had a hard drive fail about a month ago, I was back up and running in 2 hours, nothing lost. :D

My writing goes on a USB stick. My pictures on CDs.
I've switched to USB stick, too. But they don't last forever - my previous one suddenly went dead a few months ago. So yeah - a web based backup is a good thing. The Mozy software doesn't seem to support external drives like the stick - so I use mediamax.com (25 free gigs).
