Pogogirl does need to get the closing tag correct, but the URL she's trying tolink is NOT an image -- it's a script call to IMG.PHP rather than the mage itself. The URL for theimage she wants to display is http://kaboomkaboom.free.fr/gallery/home/Ginger/hw/233.jpg

A tip -- BMP format images often aren't configured to open with the browser, so BMP images trigger a download and open with whatever program is linked to the file type.

JPG and GIF are handled by the browser and just open a new window.

Sure -- the quickest way to "explain" it is to direct you to www.irfanview.com for a free image management program that makes resizing, changing formats, and color adjusments very easy.

A quick summary of image types:

BMP -- stands for Bitmap and is an uncompressed format that stores the image just as it is displayed.

GIF -- stands for Compuserve Graphics Interchange Format. It's one of the first standard compressed image formats. The format definition has been updated several times over the years to include better compression algorithms and permit animated images, but it's still limited to only 256 colors so it's not the best choice for photos -- rducing the color pallette to 256 usually results in splotchy and weirdly colored pictures.

JPeG -- a compressed graphics developed to replace the GIF standard with the capability for moe colors -- up to "true color" at 64+ million colors. JPeG (file type JPG) is what is clled a "lossy format" -- it does not always uncompress with exactly the same detail as the original image. the compression ratio is variable so yu cn adjust for maximum compression or maximum quality or some where in between. JPeG is the de facto preferred standard for internet images.

irfanview can handle and convert between these three main types and about 100 other obscure or proprietary formats. It can NOT edit animated GIFs althoughit can display them.

When are ready to save an image, choose "Save AS" from the file menu in most image editor programs to save an image in GIF or JPG format.
