Terrorist plot foiled in UK many saved

It's really funny...

We flew out of Las Vegas last week and they made a big deal of searching Jane's purse. The TSA guy put on gloves and used something to swipe the inside of her bag and made this big production all because they saw her lighter (which they stole from her) in the X-rays.

Her carry-on backpack was never an issue at McCarren.

Flying back to Las Vegas from Denver on Monday, they found a pocket knife in her backpack. She'd had it in there and had forgotten about it, since her 3 week trip to Utah (back in July) for an archeology class.

How bad did they react to finding the knife?

They just took it from her. I was in an entirely different line next to her and never noticed what was going on until I sat down to put my shoes back on. I wasn't surprised that Jane had caused another 'search', it's so her style... LOL. But I had no idea about (nor did she remember) that stupid pocket knife.

What's so amazing to me is that she got on one plane with the knife in her backpack and she's no threat to anyone.

No one is ever going to be really safe again.

Yeah, makes one mad and sad at the same time. That is what so hard at times, not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel....chances are there isn't one.

The other thing I hate is the other things which are affected all in the name of combatting it all. Freedoms, right and privacy are also affected. In some ways, even if we win, we still have lost a lot.

LOL... don't even start me on this. My son (who was also along on this trip) was sooooo annoyed with me. I wouldn't shut up about how this violated my rights and how stupid it was for anyone to THINK we were a threat because we had a lighter. A fucking Lighter!!! I mean come on... they were so preoccupied with the lighter shit that no one at McCarren paid any attention to the fact that she had a pocketknife!!!

Jesus. And again... what kind of threat did the 3 of us really pose? I guess a massive one because one of us had a damned lighter (and a pocketknife that no one noticed).

From a thread I started loooong time ago about flying to BC.

Tie up and subduuuuue

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is nothing like traveling to give one a good story.

I was in Canada last week. I had no problems leaving the states.
In my carry-on I had my laptop, a skein of yarn and a crochet hook. Since I can't smoke on the flight, I took my crocheting to keep me busy. Not one person took issue with this.

Coming back was an entirely different story.

I had my same carry-on with the same items. Those border people, who are not only not American but can hardly speak English, made me open my carry-on.

In hard to understand English, the little asian woman made me open my laptop and waved a magic wand over it. It was obviously just what it appeared to be.... a laptop. She failed miserably in magically making it anything malevolent. (I love alliteration.)

Oh my, but then she spied my yarn, 1/3 finished baby afghan and the hook. She rambled off something about this not being acceptable and that she had to get her manager and she rushed off with my stuff. Then a very middle eastern appearing manager comes back and gets right in my face about this.

He demanded to know what this (the afghan, yarn and hook) was. I explained twice that it was an afghan in progress... then, I realized he didn't know that English word so I changed to "It's a baby blanket, I am crocheting."

"Why did you not pack that in your checked bags?" he demanded to know.

"Because, I can't smoke. This gives me something to do on the plane," I explained, right back in his face.

And then.... he asked me again.

"Look sir, if it's in my bags, how do I crochet when I cannot smoke?"

At that, he tossed my stuff onto the counter, threw up his hands and walked away. I am now thinking, what did that mean? Do I get to take my things or what?

So I ask the small asian woman, "What did that mean? Do I get to take my things or what?"

She said "You should have packed this in your checked bags."

I said "Look if it's a big deal, keep the crochet hook."

"Oh no. It's not the hook," she said, with a very asian accent, as she held up the skein of baby yarn. "Tie up and subduuuue, with this."

I was stunned. And then I laughed. I am 61 inches tall and I weigh... well, not that much. Certainly, no bigger than she was. It was all just too funny.

In the end, I did get to take my crocheting with me.

If I get back in time Wednesday night, I'll post and let you know what to expect at Sky Harbor. :)

Please do. :) I'll keep an eye open for as long as I can. Either way, though, I gotta be there at like 6am. (And that's if things look better, not worse.) So I can't be up too late. :)

My local airport downgraded their security checks, so I thought it would be reasonably ok travelling home yesterday.

I was wrong.

The flight was delayed.

The checking in of baggage took a long time (not as long as flying out, but still over an hour).
Hand baggage was allowed but it could not contain any liquid. So perfume, shampoo, toothpaste had to be thrown or the bag checked into thold.

So, I checked my bag in knowing it would mean a wait at the other end.

But that was ok, it would not be too long.

I was wrong.

A stupid bitch bought a bottle of duty free vodka in the departure area and wanted to take it on the plane.

Our plane had already been delayed. It was further delayed by her.

Finally they allowed the bottle on but it had to stay with the stewards, not with her.

When we landed, our bags were quickly taken off the plane...'Great,' I thought 'Very little delay and I will soon be on my way home.'

I was wrong.

Passport control was off course slow, that was too be expected.

But due to this stupid woman everyone from my flight had to have their bags searched before we could be allowed out of the airport.
I was lucky and my bag was small and easily searched.

But, WTF was she thinking?? We are not allowed liquids and she decides to try and save £2-3 and buy a bottle of booze.
It made everyone further delayed than was necessary including the people who work on the plane and the people waiting at another airport for that plane to arrive.

People's stupidity never fails to amaze me, yet it happens so often.

It took 8 hrs to get home, when its normally 5 maximum.

I know you all think, well, a terrorist threat was resolved, but I have more cynical views than that subject.

Well I am sorry for the troubling and fustrating time. Putting the whole security things aside for a moment...I agree, sometimes people are inconsiderate and stupid. The airport broadcasts over and over...there will be no liquids or gels of any type allowed past the security point or on the plane. Wheather you agree or disagree with the security measure, don't be inconsiderate of everyone else and try to bring a bottle of vodka on the plane....lol.

Again, sorry you had such a fustrating time and I am glad you made it home safely.

:rose:

Ah, perhaps she heard one of the many reports which have been saying since the weekend that once through the checking area and into the departure area, passengers could shp to their hearts content and it would be allowed in the cabin as it was not considered dangerous if bought after passing through security and in an area restricted to passengers only. I had wondered how likely that was going to work, obviously it didn't. Happy you are home safe shy.

Catalina :rose:

I know the restrictions are a little different in the UK than they are here right now, but even liquids purchased beyond the security checkpoint here are not being allowed on the plane. Sealed, accompanied by a receipt saying "I bought this here", whatever.

Anyone HERE who held the whole plane up over a stupid bottle of vodka would probably have been lynched by the other passengers as soon as the flight crew wasn't looking. :p

I think it crossed our minds, but being British we would had formed an orderly queue and then taken turns; which would have held up the procedures even more lol

Thanks RJ and Cat for ebing concerned about my getting home safely, and to those who left Im's and pm's.

Your thoughts were appreciated.

Getting my phone back first in DK, and then again in UK, was like being given my right arm back
lol

Glad to see you got safe home, and that they were being a bit more reasonable on the way home. And sorry about the inconsiderate people. They're everywhere, sure that they'll be the exeption. "Oh, I know you said [fill in blanks], but I didn't think you mean me!

Andante is busy in CPH over the next few days, so whilst he was busy I spent 5 hours painting outdoor stuff to keep busy!!
"...outdoor stuff"! Is that all she is to you? And you forgot to mention that you were allowed to do this semi-naked in the company of a fit, sexy, gorgeous man! :p

I am not sure 'allowed' is the right term. You wanted the painting done no matter what, AND you were elsewhere.
Oh and he was fit, gorgeous and sexy, (and for those who love arms and hands, this persons were delicious, really delicious).
I could hardly paint for watching him. Sadly I was dressed in a paper boiler suit a million sizes too big, so I think he was more interested in watching paint dry than me!!

I may be in the TOTAL and complete minority here when I say this, but Thank GOD all the hussle's going on in the First World Nations. At least they're catching these pyscho motherfuckers.

"A Koran scholar said that the actual translation is not "72 dark haired virgins", but, "72 crystal-clear raisins!" Slight difference in interpertation, really?! That's like finding out "Thou Shalt Not Kill" is "Thou shalt not wear a kilt!" And the Scottish are going, FUCK OFF! No, no...! And imagine a man blows himself up and goes to the gates of heaven, saying "Where are my BITCHES?" "Here are your raisins!!"~~Robin Williams, Live on Broadway

You're probably already in bed, since you fly so early. I got to Sky Harbor about 2 1/2 hours early just to be safe. I was flying Southwest. I had already printed my boarding pass, so checked bags curbside. Took about 10 minutes. Went inside to security. Not only was there no line, I breezed right through. Took less than 15 minutes total to get to my gate. Returning from Ontario today, same thing. 10 minutes to check bags curbside, breezed right through security. Hope your flights are as uneventful!

Oh, I hope so! We're getting there 2 1/2 hours early just in case. *crosses fingers*

Seeing as there are lots of terrorist attacks in other parts of the world, I'd say not all the hussle's going on in First World Nations. We just don't care as much for bombs going up in other parts of the world as they have no implication to our daily life. We might just choose the countries where we spend vacations more carefully.

I agree with this.

And just to add I hate the term 'First World Nations' It has an uncomfortable air of superiority to it. IMO, No one country is better than another, they are simply different

I agree. I just couldn't really think of a better word this morning, so I took the one I saw
