A 50-megaton blast would result in the TOTAL destruction of New York city and most/all of New York state, and a few surrounding states as well.

Such an event would likely result in nuclear retaliation by the United States and possibly all-out full scale global thermonuclear war.

In the event of a nuclear terrorist attack, continuity of government (CoG) programs would suspend the constitution and bill of rights and allow the military to take control of the government. All VIP's such as the president and congress/senate would be transported to CoG bunkers during this state of emergency, especially if such scenario escalated to nuclear war. In fact, this could actually mark the beginning of world war 3.

During 9/11, NORAD was at DEFCON 2, meaning the missiles are fully fueled, the silo hatches opened, and ready for launch.

The government has countless emergency plans and contingencies to prepare and deal with this event (god forbid) should it actually occur. There are emergency nuclear bunkers for VIP's in every US state. There are top-secret bunkers underneath Washington DC which have tunnels leading out of them which actually lead out of the state of Virginia.

Martial law would be declared nation-wide to maintain public order and prevent panic.

Worst case scenario is that the constitution and bill of rights will never be reinstated and the United States will permanently be under a very undemocratic military dictatorship.

However, the hypothetical nuclear device would probably only be about 15 kilotons (15,000 tons of TNT) and nowhere near the unholy 50-megaton "tsar bomba" abomination developed by the Soviets (50,000,000 tons of TNT)

Nevertheless, such a device is still extremely dangerous and makes quite the bang. Not to mention radioactive fallout and the EMP effect. This is what a 15KT detonation looks like.

I certainly hope this never happens, but it is possible.
