In 1947, an alien spacecraft crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. Four beings were found dead inside. The ship and the bodies were eventually transported to the Groom Lake facility in Nevada, where scientists began dissecting them piece by piece. This inadvertently set off a short-burst subspace radio signal from the vessel in the direction of its origin, a signal that was not noticed by the humans and not received by the aliens for several decades.
On November 1st, 2016, humanity changed forever when a wormhole opened up just beyond the orbit of the Moon and a second alien vessel passed through. It was met with fear and hostility when it landed near Washington, D.C., but the aliens quickly eased tensions by revealing they meant no harm and were only seeking a safe haven. Their advanced computer systems and bionic implants allowed them to learn Earthly languages very rapidly, and they shared knowledge of what had happened on their world, Keszelcoaltahazln, or just Keszel for short. The aliens themselves came to be known as Keszelians, and resembled short elves with gray skin, silver hair, and completely black eyes except for irises that ranged from blue to purple.
The vessel that crashed in 1947 was one of three scout ships sent through wormholes to investigate possible habitable planets. Back on Keszel, a massive global war had raged on for many years between multiple factions until someone released a genetically-engineered parasite to destroy their enemies' food supplies and farms. This parasite grew out of control, however, and devastated the entire planet. Several of the factions that remained had united together to fully realize the wormhole technology that had been in reserve since the war took precedence.
Two of the vessels returned empty-handed, while the third was never heard from. As their last resources began to dwindle and the population had grown slim, the surviving Keszelians resorted to cryogenic stasis, hoping that one day they would reawaken when the planet had healed itself. Only a few days after they entered stasis, the beacon from the vessel on Earth arrived, with no one to receive it.
But a few Keszelians had risen from their slumber a few weeks prior to the trip to Earth. 1947 to 2016 -- sixty-nine Earth-years, but exactly one hundred Keszel-years. They had set a timer to wake them up every century for a brief check of systems and of the planet's recovery. They had awakened to see their world just as much of a wasteland as before, but also to see a blinking alert -- the beacon from 1947. Now they have come to Earth to investigate, monitoring digital communications and media streams for several days before making contact.
While the first few years were rather hostile, the U.S. government ultimately allowed the Keszelians to transport their remaining population to America on the condition that they share their scientific discoveries and technologies with NASA, DARPA, and FEMA. This warned off threats of World War III as America quickly became the most advanced civilization on the planet with the help of the aliens, but also caused a number of protests, riots, and civil skirmishes throughout the 2020s and 30s.
It is now 2087, and a new habitable planet has been discovered -- Terra Nova. Some people want the Keszelians to go there and leave Earth alone, while others want to share it. Our characters are part of this first wave of explorers to Terra Nova, whether they be human or Keszelian. What is your specialty and what do you have to offer the group? What powers or traits do you have thanks to genetic engineering? Are you fully human, fully Keszelian, or a hybrid spliced with alien or animal DNA? I'm open to ideas.
