Private Mike Tomlinson crawled through the rubble that had been Los Angeles, California, back in 2003 when Judgement Day had struck and nuclear missiles had fallen.
Pursuing him came three Skynet-controlled and Skynet-built Terminator Endoskeletons, firing heavy plasma rifles that would take a pickup truck to carry if humans had that technology.
Seeing the flashes burning right through the twisted metal wreckage around him, Tomlinson's eyes widened and he rolled into a cave-like opening in the pile, turning to see a half-naked woman crouched there in a ball. She was apparently feral, since she let out a primal screech and threw rocks at him.
He held her down, his hand over her mouth, until the Terminators were well past, and then he let her go.
"Hey, my name's Mike," he said, and waited for her answer, even though she apparently couldn't talk. Some humans had gotten like that after Judgement Day, and she was apparently their offspring, since it had been about twenty-five years and she only looked about eighteen, about Mike's age.
