Katherine, 22, and Serena, 18, Tennyson are orphans living with their wealthy aunt and uncle. Fed up with living under their thumbs, the sisters are trying to make a life for themselves independent of their family. Now they own Tennyson's Bookshop, a book store specializing in classic and vintage literature. When a figure from their past walks in the door one day, their worlds get turned upside-down. And it gets harder and harder to hide a secret that's been weighing on them for ten years...

Serena stood daydreaming behind the cash register as a few customers browsed the shelves. The day seemed to be passing much to slowly for her liking. Her straight brown hair was pulled into a bun, leaving her bangs to skim the tops of her hazel eyes. She wore a baggy pink sweater that slipped off her wrists and engulfed her hands most of the time, and a long denim skirt. The brown suede boots she wore covered her ankles and went halfway up her shins. virtually no skin below her neck was showing at all. She looked every bit the bookworm, which is what she was. The wire-rimmed glasses she wore slid down and perched on the end of her nose, as she looked down through them to the computer screen. Only three purchases in the last hour. Hopefully business would pick up in the afternoon. After all, it was only ten o'clock.

Kat came strolling casually in a few minutes later. In contrast to her sister's baggy, body-concealing clothes, she wore tight low-rise jeans and a cropped denim jacket that showed off her toned abs and pierced belly button. Her cranberry-colored ankle boots clicked on the floor of the shop as she walked over to the counter. Her thick brown hair was streaked with natural honey highlights, and hung wild and untamed down to the small of her back.
"How's business going?" she asked, leaning her elbows on the counter.
"Fine," replied Serena with a small smile.
"Glad to hear it," Kat said, obviously concerned with other things. "I have a photo shoot tonight, then a gig at Original Sin at eleven. I probably won't be home til about three."
"Thanks for the information. Have fun at your gig." Serena didn't even look up as she heard receding clicks, followed by the door opening and closing again. Kat was gone. She never stayed anywhere for too long at a time.

After all this time, he was finally back in his home town of Pinellas Park, Florida. For good this time. He had left Florida when he was eighteen to pursue a literary degree from Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut. His nearly perfect grade point average made for a good first impression, and he had been accepted, graduating four years later as Valedictorian with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature & Creative Writing. Although he had spent summers and holidays at his parents’ house (they were both herbalists and grew many kinds of plants and herbs in the huge greenhouse behind their house which they sold at their own little herb shop, Nature’s Remedies), he had rarely gone to see his old friends from high school. The last time he had seen his old girlfriend Kat and her sister Serena must have been at Christmas two and a half years ago. It was now June of 2007, and with his degree finally within his grasp, he came back home.

A few days after getting back, Kenny McCloud was reading through the classifieds of the St. Petersburg Times looking for potential employment, while eating his bacon and eggs and drinking his cup of coffee. Taking a break from the want ads, Kenny read through the rest of the paper, when his eyes drifted over a familiar name -- Tennyson. A bookstore of the same name could be seen in the background of a large photo accompanying an article about a car crash that had happened in front of the store the previous day.

Could it be? Kenny thought to himself, then smiled and proceeded to shower and dress, then drove over to the store in his black firebird. He parked, sighed, and walked through the doors. His heart began pounding as he saw Serena Tennyson sitting at the front desk on a stool, looking down at a computer screen. Taking a deep breath, he walked over and leaned on the counter.

“You’ve blossomed into a beautiful flower from the little girl I used to know.” He was wearing blue jeans and a white t-shirt, with a light blue shirt over it, open and unbuttoned with the sleeves rolled up to just below the elbows.

Serena looked up as someone started speaking to her. When she saw Kenny, her face lit up and she smiled brightly.
"You're back!" She said happily, getting up from her stool and running out from behind the counter to give him a hug. He was one of the few people she was even the tiniest bit open with. When he used to come over to see Kat, he'd sit and talk to Serena as if she were of equal importance to him. Even when she was shy and was in a bad mood, he'd always find a way to cheer her up and start a conversation. Even after his long absence, she had nothing but fond thoughts of him. "How are you? You look wonderful. I'm afraid you've just missed Kat. She was just here a minute ago, but she had work to do so she left." She blushed, realizing she was chattering on and on.

Kenny smiled as Serena dove into him, hugging him tightly. The smell of her hair as she pressed her head against his chest was intoxicating. She was not that little girl anymore -- she was a woman. He never wanted to let go, but eventually he did, smiling as the two chatted.

“I’m fine. Thank you, you look quite wonderful yourself. Ah, yes, that does sound like her, always on the go,” he said as he leaned against the counter.

“So, how’s life been treating you? Anything exciting happen while I was away, besides this awesome store?” said Kenny, leaning forward and putting an arm around Serena. “Any Mr. Rights yet?”

Serena smiled as Kenny put his arm around her. "For me? No. For Kat? Several. One walked out just last week, in fact. And it's really Kat's store. She bought it. I just run things. She won't say so, but I'm fairly sure she bought it for me. In case you hadn't heard, she's a big important model now. And she's in a band. You know her, ever the busy little bee." She went back behind the counter. "She'll be so sorry she missed you."

“Well, it’s not like I’m going anywhere,” Kenny said with a smile. “I’m looking for a local job, so I’ll be around for good this time.” Smiling again, he leaned forward and kissed her forehead. “Wanna ditch this place for the day and go to the beach?”

"Oh, I couldn't do that. I don't close until one today." She shot him an apologetic smile. "Tell you what. If you're still wanting to go to the beach on Thursday, I'll be happy to go. I don't open the shop on Thursdays." She looked down at the counter and stacked some books to be put away later. People sometimes changed their minds at the last minute. It irked her, but lots of people did it, so what could she do? She pushed up her sleeves to her elbows, and noticed a strange bruise on her arm she didn't remember getting. Oh well, she thought. She was always bumping into things and probably just forgot. Suddenly, a thought dawned on her. "Hey, I could give you a job here. Though I couldn't pay very much. And if you need a place to stay, there's an apartment upstairs that we're using for storage right now."

“Well, I was looking for a business job and a really big apartment...” Kenny said, then though for a moment. “But if I worked and lived here for the summer, I could come down and see you all the time. Hmmm... Yes, that would be awesome. Okay, if you’re serious, I’ll take the job and the apartment, but only till the end of summer. And since most of what you would pay me for my work would go to the apartment anyway, why don’t we just call it even? By working for you, you allow me to live up there? I have enough in my bank to cover necessities for a few months. Whatdya say?” He leaned forward and kissed her nose.

She blushed when he kissed her nose. "Sounds fair to me. You'll have to give me and Kat a couple of days to clear out the boxes and stuff, though. It's pretty packed." A customer came in and she smiled brightly at him, then turned her attention back to Kenny. "By Wednesday I think it should be all set. Do you have a place to stay until then? Because if you don't, we have an extra room at the house."

“Well, I’m staying at home right now,” he said with a smile. “However, I would not be opposed to a “sleepover”, hehe.”

Her cheeks flushed a deep red and she looked down at the ground. "Wouldn't that be a bit strange? Grown adults having a sleepover?" Was he flirting with her? No, it couldn't be. They'd known each other for years. He viewed her as a sister. Of course he wasn't flirting. But then why did his comment sound so flirtatious? SHe looked up as a customer came in, and smiled. "Good morning. Let me know if I can help you with anything."

“Not if we’re both having fun,” he said with a smile. “We could cuddle in front of the TV and watch movies!”

A few more customers trailed in. "I should help them. Come to the house tonight and I'll feed you dinner. I bet if you head over to the club, Kat'll be there, nitpicking over details as usual."

“The club?” Kenny backed away and allowed Serena to help the customers, then stepped forward again. “What club?”

"Original Sin, the new nightclub in town. It's just a few blocks over, where that old movie theater used to be."

“Oh, okay,” Kenny said, then smirked. “You know Kat won’t be back in time for dinner, so what time should I ditch her and meet you at the house?”

"Dinner is at seven, and Kat never misses dinner." Another group of customers came in and she smiled at them and told them to let her know if they needed anything.

“Well, if she’s at the club, she’s probably busy with partying. I’ll just meet you at your house at seven and meet her then too,” he said, then smiled, hugged her tight, then left.

Meanwhile, a young man walked into Original Sin, smiling as he looked around. He had long dirty blonde hair, was wearing a trench coat, and had on a western hat. Then, spotting a gorgeous woman with long brown hair at the counter, he walked over and sat next to her. “Howdy, Miss. Can I buy you a drink?”

One corner of Kat's mouth perked up as the stranger approached her. "Sorry, partner, but the bar's not open yet. Come to think of it, neither is the club. What are you doing in here at ten in the morning, anyway?" Was this guy for real? Who wore a cowboy hat outside of halloween, other than actual cowboys? He was cute, though, she admitted to herself. And he had dimples. She'd always been a sucker for dimples.

“Oh, right,” said the man with a laugh. He lifted his hat slightly. “Name’s Evan Sinclair. Just enjoying a summer away from the Rockies. Sorry to have intruded before normal hours.” He smiled and nodded, then turned around and headed for the door.

"Hey," Kat said to him before he left. "If you come back when we're actually open, I'll buy you a drink." She sent him a flirtatious smile over her shoulder as she went through a heavy steel door taht separated the club from the backstage area and storage room.

“I just might take you up on that,” Evan said with a smile, then turned and left the club. At five that evening, he walked back through the doors, walked up to the bar, and looked around for the gorgeous woman that hadn’t even given him a name.

Meanwhile, Kenny was sitting at home watching television, waiting for seven to roll around.

Kat was tending bar, as her regular bartender called in sick. She was dressed in a black leather corset with a red satin belt cinched around her tiny waist. Her snug, low-rise black jeans were worn mostly for comfort, but also happened to go with her ensemble. Her hair was left to its own devices, as usual, hanging down in unruly waves. Around her neck hung a heart-shaped ruby hung on a black ribbon. The pendent rested just at the top of her considerable cleavage. She laughed at something a customer said, then refilled his drink.

Serena closed the shop a little early, then went right home to clean the house and get dinner started. She was upset that Kat couldn't come join them for dinner, but understood how important her club was to her. After the house was clean and dinner was in the oven, Serena lay down on the couch to relax for a moment. It seemed that lately she was always tired. Maybe she should take a few days off...

“Hey. How about that drink?” Evan said with a smile as he spotted the girl. He was wearing his hat over his long hair. A tight black t-shirt hugged his chest, accompanied by tight black jeans. He wore black boots and a large belt, with a long brown trench coat over it.

Meanwhile, as seven rolled around, Kenny dressed up in a nice pair of denims and a light blue polo. He drove over to Serena’s house in his firebird, strolled up the front steps, and rang the doorbell.

Kat saw him and couldn't help but smile. "Sure, Cowboy. What'll you have?" One of the waitresses waggled her eyebrows at Kat from across the room, but kat tried to ignore it.

Serena opened the door, dressed in a gray pencil dress that hugged her petite frame and accentuated her tiny waist. Her hair was pulled back and twisted into a bun, secured with black hair chopsticks. Her look was completed by black plastic framed glasses and black suede pumps. All in all, she looked like someone straight out of a movie from the fifties. "Right on time. Come on in." SHe smiled and stepped aside so he could enter.
