Tell me about sweeps

I have read in this forum and others that Literotica has some kind of "sweep" that alters votes and scores. I searched this forum and google, but I didn't find very much information on the first few pages of results.

Tell me about sweeps. What are they? When are they? What do they change? Why?

The sweeps remove votes consider questionable by Lit. The only known and fully confirmed criteria are that multiple votes from the same IP/ID are removed.

Beyond that, there are posts in the past confirming that votes falling far "outside the norm" are sometimes swept as well ( usually, 1s )

I've also observed sweeps that removed 1-bombs from whole pages of the toplist, cast to move some stories down and another up.

Themed contests are notorious for deep-cutting sweeps, which I suspect comes about because the "Hoover" as I often call it looks deeper into the IP trying to eliminate multi-votes.

Beyond that, the actual criteria are unknown -- for good reason. Revealing exactly how the sweeps work is like putting an expensive alarm system in your house, then posting the wiring diagram on a billboard in the front lawn.

The changes in score come about when the score is averaged after any votes are removed.

Dark covered what.

When is "at random." Different levels of "sweep" run at different frequency. The ones mostpeople notice are the comprehensive "final scoring" sweeps run just before winners are determined for the various contests.

"Why" is that fraudulent, malicious and erroneous votes distort the ranking on top lists and contest position. It doesn't matter if a double vote is the result of system hangup -- like double posts in the forums -- or a campaign to smear an author or story or inflate the score of a contest entry. The sweeps adjust the voting to reflect the ideal of one reader=one vote.

As long as there aren't two or more Lit. members in the same household, using the same ISP, appartently.

There is a way to do it if you have dsl and use preset isp numbers, which most do to track who is overusing the bandwidth. I won't explain it here for obvious reasons but it is not hard to do.

Nonsense. The sweeps look for references to homo worship; if they find none the ONEs stay and the FIVEs go; if they find homo worship the FIVEs stay and the ONEs go.

Does anybody else feel that the sweeps might be a bit too drastic though? One of my stories had about 150 votes, which is about par for me and which it had gathered over the course of 7 months. Tonight it's suddenly down to about 60. It wasn't part of a contest, nor do I think it's the type of story anybody would vote repeatedly for.

Check what month it was released, and think about when you last looked at the vote total.

Then, go to the awards section of the forum and see if any of the monthly award winners threads fall within the range of when you saw the vote totals plunge, and match the month you released the story. You don't have to enter the monthly contests -- all you need to do is post stories and they're automatically entered.

Monthly contest sweeps are contest sweeps, and they cut to the bone.

Looks like that's what happened. Thanks!

Then the good news is that the worst of the storm is over :D No everyday maintainence sweep will ever match a contest sweep -- or even hold a candle to it.

Want some real frustration? I've had a story with more signed comments than remaining votes after sweeps before *laugh*

Ouch... I guess we can be happy that for the about 6 month delay on the monthly sweeps and enjoy the warm and fuzzy feelings in the meantime!
