This is a big story locally right now, and I'm curious as to what you all think.

The short version:

The parents of a teenage girl asked her school administration to keep an eye on her because she was "acting strange." Said administration saw her and another girl kissing and holding hands on the school's security cameras, then proceeded to tell/show the girls' parents.

The parents of one of the girls have called her "homosexual activities" an abomination and yanked her out of her school. They are sending her to a private school that advertises "homosexual re-education."

The girls were breaking the rule of no kissing/PDAs on campus, but they aren't being disciplined for that. School district officials aren't taking action against the administrator, but have said it wasn't kosher and it won't happen again.

Long version here

I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on anything pertaining to this article and the issues this covers, and some good discussion! :)

"They're paying good money for us to make their kids good citizens," he said. "Whatever that means to the parents, I'll do it."

So basically he's drooling over the money.. -_-
And trying to MAKE their kids good citizens means they mustn't grow to be homosexual either right?Cause we're an abomination. Yeah i get what kind of school and parents they are.

I can't believe this... Unusual behavior.. And the poor girl is sent to be 're-educated'? God these kind of people get on my nerves. I mean people if your child must meet YOUR requirements to receive your love, then you may as well not have one at all...
Homophobia is sure a disgusting thing >_>

And using that camera for other than security reasons is just wrong. Isn't there some way for them to proceed to legal measures against the school for that matter?
And after this incident the Principal says he wants the children to feel comfortable? Gimme a break..

I like how the girls said they were doing nothing wrong, you know. They could have said nothing at all and just go with the 'I'm guilty' behavior, but they sticked to their ideals.
I hope both the girls will be alright. If you hear anything else about this do tell .. :rose:

Personally I think the principle should be stuck into an office in some crappy little building and have nonsense work piled on him until he quits.

The parents should have their daughter removed from them because of abuse to a minor, I mean seriously, how hard is it to deal with when your caught pecking at anotehr girl to be sent a few hours away to some re-education school. Heck since it's a church run school it's closer to a concentration camp than a regular school.

Though suppose in a way it helps the church, they collect money from her parents and when she leaves her husband for a woman and is a full lesbian they can point to her and say she is the problem with the world.

I swear I so do not get why so many people can't simply BUTT THE FUCK OUT.

I mean why does it matter if this guy over here really can't think of anything but being tied up bent over and fucked by 20 guys, not like he is going to force you to watch him, well couldn't if he wanted to anyway, tied up and all. ;)

Or that this woman only likes other woman, and these other woman have to be blonde and buxxom, or that this guy only wants a woman who weighs over 200 pounds.

I just wonder what happened to people at one time a woman only into other woman was an old maid, otherwise known as the really nice lady living with a roommate who makes the lovely lemonaid. The gay man, otherwise known as the ice cream guy who lives with a friend.

It may be sort of kinda barely mentioned in the bible, but 50 years ago nobody really gave a fuck what anyone was into in the bedroom. It was always fresh meats, fresh milk, fresh veggies, and a nice freindly hello, anything else so what, not my business.

You could claim the riots and segregation ending things going on took everyone's thoughts away from anythign else, except you would be wrong, for the most part unless you lived in that city you didn't care, you either said what is wrong with those people in that city, or why is this such a big deal. Maybe we will get lucky and this whole what you do in your bedroom behind closed curtains is my business bullshit will go away with Bush.

Thats just crap the principal needs fired the parents need to be sent to a school for understanding an acceptance and the girl needs to get her girlfriend back. Its funny how things are time and time again proven by science and yet people tend to follow the bible a book written thousands of years ago on what to decide on things.

My concern is this "re-education." Do they even care what she's going to face? Every school teacher and administrator will know what happened. In private school? Word will be all over the place. She'll face hazing and everything else there.

I wish people would be more mindful of things like this and research why this might be happening. They're going to lose their daughter - spiritually and mentally for doing this.

See my rant on this kind of topic in the "Two weeks cure"-thread.

Cameras aren't that bad, but kissing happens all the time, also at schools, so why shouldn't it be outlawed? The principal would have reacted otherwise, I guess, if there had been a boy and a girl kissing instead of two girls.

"Re-education" ...

That really is rather worrying, I mean surely theres something wrong with that phrase. I agree with all thats been said, but what I don't understand is how these parents can be so god damn willing to strip their daughter of everything she is just because she happens to like girls, and isn't "normal" in their eyes.

When do people grow up and realise Love is Love, and it doesn't matter who loves who?

I should probably go before I go off on a ten page rant about the complete and utter ignorance of some people...

Yeah, I know where you want to go. Re-education and curing homosexuality is just BS, it doesn't exist, only in the minds of the conservative.

It's nice to know some people get it.

Complete and utter crap thats what this re-education is. Poor girl...

*Is totally holding back a rant here*

Let it out, we're at the GLBT-board here. Everyone opposing the GLBT-community has to get a rant opposing his/her views, they deserve it; if you know what I mean, 'coz English is not my first language.

Interesting responses so far. :)

The "re-education" is certainly worrying to me too. The father spoke of it on a radio program, and when asked how long his daughter would be there, he said something like, "Ah, six months, a year, or however long it takes to set her right." :(

That sounds a hell of a lot more like a brainwashing and intimidation program than a school, and it makes me sick to think our tax dollars could be supporting something like that. I just hope she says/does whatever she needs to in order to get out of the asap and/or doesn't succumb to the brainwashing.

I think we have to remember that the parents think they're doing right by their daughter - they don't know trying to change her orientation, uprooting her and not accepting her is likely to have a huge negative impact on her psyche long-term. I don't believe they, or the school, think they are trying to harm her.

As for taking action against the school/administrator who outted them, I'm not sure there's any recourse because they're minors and the law wasn't broken. However, a case like this could be picked up by one of the civil liberties organizations, and legislation regarding privacy could be lobbied for because of it, I suppose. The district has already made it clear that its new policy is to not tell parents, and I'm guessing most of the other districts here will adopt the same policy to avoid negative press.

I am sad, that even Danes are paying tax money to an Organisation in Denmark by the name Agape who brainwashes people. the only thing I can say without being more hostile. Is that I think it is fuckedup.

Fockers. Kids already have a hard enough time at school if they are having feelings for someone of the same sex. Now these stupid dickheads do this..

eesh

According to the other girl kissed they only pecked, I have done that with close friends in high school, doesn't make them gay just good friends who are happy to see each other.

Now I guess I should say, the re education school far as I know is church done, no taxes go into that besides whatever the state sets aside for helping a church run school, otherwise the monies that goes into running that school comes from the parents of the 'students' so it's only costing the parents money and maybe anyone else living in Washington.

Now I suppose the funniest part, even if she was straight and just pecked her friend to say Hi, she is probably coming out of that re education bi or gay. Since the church says pre marital sex is bad, the guys will all be in one dorm, and the girls will all be in another, raging hormones and not being able to get with a guy leads to sex or at least thinking about with another woman or guy. Oddly enough more or less how I slept with my lone woman. ;)

They sent her to a re-education school. they probably don't care what happens to her, as long as she is cured/re-educated/fucked up.

Hmm we could build re-education schools for straight people to counter theirs!
