From another board, I was reading a thread from a guy who works at a mall, and noticed at lot of the teens wearing collars, and even being lead through the mall with a leash. And with Britney doing bondage spreads, I guess the trend will only grow. Is this just a fashion statement or a sign that bdsm is becoming more mainstream?

Nope, teens were wearing collars when I was a teen. Back in the olden days they called them chokers.

I still believe the old adage, "there is nothing new under the sun".

my teen owns and wears about 5 differant collars, she also has a couple leashes that she uses. she wears them for fashion statments not BDSM, she is a "punk".

Peekign out of the old folks howm...

yes they do, most i being an old school punk wouldn't call punk, (but my daughter is old school punk, and if she doesn't stop snagging my pistols CD's life as she knows it will end quickly ;) )

Just goes to show that "old school" can relate to anything.

Is there such a thing as old "old school"? :p

When I was in High School a huge number of the girls and boys wore collars, all ranging in styles and colors and, well, it was sort of creepy sometimes. They had leashes, too. It was sort of a "punk" thing, but more of the "goth" style - you know, they shaved off their eyebrows and drew them back on in weird designs, spiked their black hair and wore their faces white with tons of black makeup on over it. They also wore (and I see people in town about my age still doing these styles) leather wrist restraints and belts that lock on with rings, chains everywhere...tight, tight leather that sometimes looks pretty hot even on creepy people = ) I am actually thankful that this was so mainstream, because when I got enough courage to go into a store downtown and buy this stuff, it was very, very easy to find and cheap as well. Still got some of it.

Have you noticed that many of the newer fetish clubs lump together, punk, goth, BDSM and others alternative activities together?

Just like the term BDSM was used to lump together certain activities that were out of the bell curve.

Yes, definitely. In DC we don't have enough fetish clubs to have separate ones for BDSM and goth/punk, but I think many of the people who attend are into both scenes anyway. (I'm not goth or punk, but I find some elements interesting so I don't mind seeing that when I go to what I consider a BDSM club.)

I do know I want to go back to school if that is what they are teaching, darn it......

"God Save The Queen!"

S'funny, because our submissive is an "ex-punk". She was laughing because a lot of what I want her to wear is what she used to wear when she was 16.

Go figure.

As Red says, ain't nothing new under the sun.

I never wore collars or leashes at school, but i did occasionally do the goth thing, and my cousin used to wear a choke chain around his neck. LoL... he used it for a weapon a few times.

Back in the day.... and I am way older than 99% of you... we wore chokers because they were cool and fashion statement... hell I don't think BDSM had been coined at the time... yes children it was the olden times...

I wore a leather choker with a peace sign... it was a fashion and political statement... :D

And low and behold... teens are still doing it today... although it is no longer the dark ages....

Not to be insulting or rude, but punk is an attitude, not an outfit. That is somewhat of a quote from John Rotten himself. I do think though that the line between the threebdsm/punk/goth, is somewhat blurred to the "average" joe.

Of course that doesn't count if you were way before the days of punk and the Rotten one... It was hippies then, honey... you know peace, love and all that ....

Yeah true, I don't consider myself punk, I do have some of the attitude though. I am more like reggae, upbeat, happy and stoned. :D

i have to agree with the attitude statement but on the other hand the outfits normal reflect the attitude (Johhny also made the statment that sex is boring :p )

So is BDSM or D/s. It can be an attitude, lifestyle or kink. It does not matter what you wear.

I seldom wear "Domme" fetish clothing. I like to wear what I like. It does not mean I am not a "real" dominant, it just means I wear what I like!:D

I am a child of the 60's, a hippie of sorts, I too wore chokers with peace signs and pot leafs.

I also have noticed on Videos, MTV,BET the collars, leashes and such. I don't believe these images are direct associations with BDSM. Thugs have always wanted control :)

I do believe BDSM lifestyle is becoming more main stream, as people begin to open themselves to who they are on the inside.

 T

just because a person wears a collar does not mean they are BDSM or that BDSM is becoming mainstream anymore than a person wearing baseball cap makes them a baseball player

lilredwolph just said it. Quotably, I might add.

I wish my mom had listened to the Pistols.

:(

Yes, it's an attitude and it's in the music, not the plastic chokers.

I listen to punk, indie punk, pop-punk. The Posterchildren. Sarge. The Strike. Bands nobody's heard of.

Nary a collar or a plaid hot topic pant with staps in sight.

Lots of six dollar salvage old man pants worn around the hips and well-worn pumas. Straightedge boys don't wear collars. They write long and text-heavy zines involving Noam Chomsky and they read Adbusters.com

My fetish life and my new-school punk life do not mix, I'm sad to say, 'cause I have more in common with most of those folks.

quite right, very well put.

i'd agree with those who said teh collar dosen't mean submissive, i am abit of an industrial fan (i think they call shoe rivit heads)(also like heavy metal, prague, and some just isane stuff, but mostly hard stuff) anyways that makes me end up at the clubs which are sometimes officialy fetish nights, but play the kind of music i like at some times. i've known alot of the people in this community, and most of them are attracted by the look/clothes/music, and less come for the BDSM aspect. though the two often mix, because if you put rather bohemian people in the same room as som epeople who are very kinky the two experiment with one another. and thier is a kind of kink that is gothic, i don't really get into it, pleather/leather is to hot for texas most of the time, and i don't realy understand how you can get to into that and have a real job.

but this does mean that you can get some really great collars/fetish clothing for cheeper, as someone else said, and sometimes by going to the clubs you can get an idea of some outfits to try that would be pleaseing to the eye of your Dom/ess. which is something i always enjoy..

as for this makeing things more mainstream, if you expose the populace to ideas and notions that are at first extradonary, eventualy thier responce to it will be less remarkable. if i see a woman with bright pink hair, cover in tatoo's and piercings, wearing almost nothing it dosen't really stun me, i've seen it alot. hell i've worn it (except i never went pink, purple was my signature color for years when i was in college, thinking of going back to it in the eggplant form)..and most of the populace will get to the point they are like "eh, BDSM, have you heard about furries!?" eventualy.

I use the collars for my hair. they snap and are great for harnessing the ponytail from Hell.
