"It would be fanciful at best to say these programs were solely responsible for the decline, of course that's not the case."
The programs mentioned in the comment were ones put in place for the Teen Pregnancy Prevention program, a program that began under former President Barack Obama in 2010. Since their implementation, teen pregnancy rates have fallen to the lowest ever recorded, including a substantial drop soon after the programs went into effect.
However, all that work will come to naught as Tom Price, Secretary of Health and Human Services, has unilaterally cut off all further funding after 2018, two years ahead of schedule. He did so without consulting anyone in Congress who are responsible for the nation's purse strings.
One reason behind this severance could possibly be Price's own anti-science, anti-information stance on pregnancy. Specifically, he believes abstinence is the only subject which should be taught to children. Under this program, only a handful of such programs received government money.
Bill Albert, chief innovation officer at the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, the person responsible for the opening quote, believes the funding has contributed to the continuing decline of teen pregnancy in this country.
"Some of that leaves you scratching your head wondering, why mess with success?"
