I also have some difficulty with general euphamisms for various body parts. Most of them are okay, they are either cute, funny, horny, sexy, dirty, naughty, adorable, whatever. One word, though, sets my teeth on edge. Primarily because I cannot, for the life of me, figure out where it came from.

Thats it. Nothing more. The first time I came across this particular euphamistically used term, I had no idea what the author was talking about. Harlequin Romance #42, I was like, 12. Sex was two sentences, something about she took his member and they had fun all night. It took me a while to figure out what was going on.

I also noticed the way it was used in stories on the site. The authorsuse it when referring to the cock in parts of the story where sex is not occurring. They then use cock or dick or prick or weenie or something when he's playing hide the salami.

Why on earth would a man refer to his penis as a member? Do you require it to join the club of your body? Does it pay dues? The initiation boggles the mind.

I find myself uncomfortable with the word, for some odd reason, and I was merely wondering why some authors use it. I don't use it myself, nor does it turn me off of stories where authors do use it. It just makes me uncomfortable. Why member?

I don't know where that usage comes from, but I suspect it has it's roots in Victorian times or even further back. Back as far as the roots of the word "Dismember" meaning to separate the various parts of the human body.

Maybe "member" is used to refer to cock in stories where one needs to be less explicit and has been carried over into erotic writing because of habit.

I can't think of a female counter part. Well maybe if a writer says "He/she played with her love button" instead of saying "He/she swirled his tongue around her aroused clit." might qualify some what.

More on Members

KM & WH, I popped into the library this morning and looked in the Dict. of Slang.
It appears that member comes from 1840's (Victorian times as WH said) and refers to 'the member for cockshire'. The member being a ref to 'Member of Parliament': cock - I'm sure that you know all about those: a shire is an area of land.

You could also use Willy or Willie, winkle, dangly bit (or bits for the full set), tail, plonker (cockney so probably not a lot of use for an international porn site)

It is nice to know the exact etemology of the way words are used. I only knew it was an old term that had the feels of Victorian prudishness about it. I'm glad I guessed right. <G>

In my copy of The Oxford Dictionary of the English Language the article lists the first usage in refernce to a cock as occuring in 1530. The refence is to segments that have a "diferent tincture from the body". A refernce to the color change that a cock gets as it reachs full engorgement.
