Four more days left til classes were over. Mr. Andrews couldn't wait. No matter how dedicated to the job he was, these last weeks were always the hardest. Spring came, and the girls started wearing next to nothing, and no one wanted to do any work, least of all the teachers. But there was still work to be done if his students were going to pass the exam and be allowed to graduate. Still, he thought he had done well this year. There were still one or two on the edge, but there was only one student he had really given up on. There's not a lot a teacher can do if a student doesn't make it to class, and she only showed once every couple of weeks.
The bell rang, and the room emptied in a flash. In the hall was the usual riot of noise as at the end of every day, when the students were finally free and let loose. He sat down at his desk and glanced at the stack of papers he had collected. He was going to have a lot of reading to do tonight, but first, he thought, I need to let loose a little too. He went to the closet to get his gym bag. A few miles on the track would let him work out the tension and clear his mind a little. Funny, he thought, I never used to excercize. Since he had started teaching, he had turned into a slim, trim man. He reached up to loosen his tie when he heard footsteps. He turned to see who it was.
He frowned, wondering what had made her come here. He knew there was no way she could make up all the work that she had missed this term. She had to know it as well. From talking to her other teachers, it was pretty clear she wouldn't graduate this year. He sighed and set the bag down.
"Nice of you to drop by," he said. "What's the occasion?"
