Where do I go to do my taxes online?

When I google it I mostly get paid advertisements...

TaxActOnline

Its absolutely free to do your federal taxes with them, and you can e-file directly from their website.

I've used them for the last three years, and have absolutely no complaints.

I file with TurboTax (http://www.turbotax.com). It's not free, but it's really good! Actually, I DO get it for free but that's only because I have insurance through StateFarm. If you have insurance through StateFarm, you can simply log into www.statefarm.com and a link is to the left of the screen for free tax filing through TurboTax.

And if you feel like you need extra help, there's also a paid option available - still very inexpensive!

I used TaxActOnline last year and it was very easy.

The site is actually taxact.com. You can choose to file the standard version free or upgrade to the deluxe version where you can get more help with regard to each question.

The free version prompts you with questions based on the information you provide. It walks you through question by question all the way to filing electronically. Just prior to submitting your return it will ask if you want your refund direct deposited into your bank account. If you choose that option you can have your refund within 10 days, if not sooner.

I have used taxact for the past six years. I do our joint return, all three boys returns along with family and friends.

Be careful though. At the end of the Federal questions it will prompt you to do your state. You can put in all your state information, but they charge you to print your state prior to filing. I believe it is like $12.95 to print which is comparable to what other sites charge to file state.

While answering questions for the Federal return in the upper right hand corner of your screen, each change you make shows the amount of your refund or the amount you owe, whichever is the case. It also shows you based on the state info you put in from your W-2's what you have coming back on your state or what you owe. The state may vary from what it shows when you actually prepare your state return. The Federal, however, is exactly what you will owe or have refunded to you.

I do not file our state income taxes through taxact. I go to our state website and there are forms you can actually fill in on the computer. The computer adds the columns as you go and then you can print and mail that in. It doesn't cost to file state that way and I can retain a copy for my records.
