This might just belong in the How To's, but I've put it here so we'll live with that.

Gf is getting me a tat for my birthday next month. Anyone out there with some experience, please give tips on the process and on tell tale signs of a professional with good sanitary practices.

By the way (is that btw? I'm new at this) the tattoo will be the rebel alliance symbol from the Star Wars movies.

May the Force be With You

First of all make sure the guy/girl who makes the Tatoo uses a completely new sanitary neddle.
When you got it, DO NOT SCRATCH. It will it's. It's a wound after all. But damn dont scratch. Remember to aply moisterizers or something simular twice a day. Do not expose the tat to direct sun either.
Other than that just go for it.

I agree...try not to scratch, I lost some of the color by scratching at a little scab that formed over the bottom of my healing tattoo. Also, use Preperation H on it to help reduce the swelling. Try not to put it where your skin is thin...it hurts more!

A good artist will have sterile supplies that he/she opens from a sealed package in front of you.

Sounds like a cool tattoo, you'll have to post pics!

Good luck!

Here's a site that has a lot of information on tatoos and piercing. There is a QOD (question of the day) section that you can do searches on that might give you answer's to your questions. But, yes make sure the place is clean and the artist maintains sterile procedures.

I suppose that a lack of complaints with the Better Business Bureau would be a good sign as well. It's not a guarantee of good work if there are no complaints, but if they do have a complaints file, it's a bad sign.

Posting a GIF, JPG, or BMP is done with the IMG, /IMG tag pair. The instructions for the syntax can be found here:

When I got my tatoo done, the way I knew that the guy used a sterlie needle was that he got a new one right out of the package and I watched him put it on. Also look around the shop if it isnt clean looking I might look for another shop. Also what the others have said about not scratching, I think I used 3 in 1 antibacteria cream on mine but I can't remember it has been a while. Also the guy I got mine from gave me a couple of small tubes to put on it.. One last thing, dont do it drunk, maybe a couple at most to take off the edge, but if you do it drunk you stand a good chance of lossing your lunch.. not a good thing..

Ah Tatoos something I can talk about with relative expertise...

The first rule of thumb is this to me, I go and hang out around the tattoo parlor a couple of times and see who goes in and who comes out, the artist technique and sanitari-ness of the facility. Ask as many questions as you like, tell the artist the deal, i.e. this is your first time, and they will explain what happens and how they do it.

Rule No 1
Make sure the artist does not use a pre-used needle

Rule No 2
Make sure the INK he uses is fresh out of the bottle, not an old "cap" that has been lying around

Rule No 3
Be careful what you ask for, i.e. names and such, most artist that I know will not do proper names other than "mom" or "dad" or things like that

Rule No 4
Be prepared, do not drink or do drugs before going in. The alcohol in your blood will make it "bleed" more, i.e. tattooing is actually placing ink in the skin and will be a "scar" and therefore bleeding is normal, but when you drink before going in it thins the blood......

Rule No 5
Placement of the tattoo on your body. Put it somewhere you can live with the rest of your life.

Rule No 6
Proper care and maintenance during the healing process. Use plenty of Neo-sporin or like products. They will inhibit any infections.....also clean with a sponge or washcloth once a day or so.....and also try to keep the wound covered until it is healed. When you get home from work or whatever, remove the bandage and just the let the "scar" be in its natural state (Neo sporin and air)

Rule No 7
DO NOT SCRATCH, as much as it may ITCH do not scratch it. It is a wound and needs to heal IF you scratch you will allow infection and stuff in there.

Rule No 8
After it heals and has scabbed, use Vitamin E on it to help heal it even better

Rule No 9
If you sunbath and it is in a sunny area, use lots and lots of sunscreen on it to protect it. If you do not, it will fade.

There are so many more, but I think this is the jist. The guy who has done mine, presses very hard and I have not had to go back for any "touch ups" at all. I have 3 and mine all look as good today as the day I got them.....just for your info The first one was done like 10 years ago and the last one about 18 months ago.

Good Luck and if you have any questions, email me via the link on this post.

Use Lubriderm or another good, unscented lotion. It will help keep the skin supple and minimize itching.

Good call CreamyLady

Yes and use Lubriderm or another good unscented lotion AFTER the TAT has healed and is scabbed no more....right on CreamyLady.........forgot about that one.

By the way my rules are incorrect in their order but just the same some good rules for the road.

All good information on tattoos. This deserves to be ahead of the dumb threads.

Agree totally with all the advice that you were given chukus and creamy lady gave you some awesome advice. The neo-sporin ointment is a must it will help if you do it as much as possible whenever it feels dry. I got one done a few years back and know or know about the tatoo artist. I knew mine very well and if they won't answer your questions then they are not the right ones. Make sure the needles come right out of the wrapper a good sterile area is a must.

Don't get one if you are not comfortable with the person giving you one that is very important.

I have a few and the hubby has 6. I don't know where you live but (here in N.C.) most places will not give you a tat if you have been drinking or using drugs. The last guy we used asked us not to take any asprin(sp) or anything before hand. I agree with everyone else about the scratching. Be sure of what you want and where you want it placed b/c it is permanent. My hubby has our daughters and my name on his arms and it kinda limited what else he could put there. Otherwise, ENJOY!!!!!!!
