I recently helped a lady downsize her house because she was moving to an apartment. This happened through my job, we don't just clean out foreclosures, there are lots of reasons people need to get rid of things and that is where we come in.

Anyway, she gave me an entire container (nearly footlocker size) full of tarot books, packs of cards and sets of books with cards. I know very little about tarot, but am now going to be reading a bit about it. I never knew there were so many different types of cards and backgrounds that utilized cards for this purpose. Do any of you delve into this arena?

I think it could be fascinating to read the histories and learn about the different types, but I personally don't have any belief in the power of tarot for divination purposes. It would be a lark to play with them.

I am going to take some pix later and post them. I always thought it was a gypsy thing, apparently it is a whole lot more.

Damn near all modern tarot sets are the same. The cards I mean. The names of the four sects may vary a bit; I.e. pentacles /coins but they all read the same. The sets actually have not changed since about the renaissance time. There were more cards before that I have been told. Though a true Gypsy deck has different cards. Basic sets have all the same.

If it's not a real sentimental gift and you'll only poke at the tarot world just to get bored and put it back in the clutter corner when the thrill is gone, I got one word for you: eBay.

If you package and display it right, there's bound to be someone in the field or an aficionado or a person who just simply lives that life that might pay some good walkin' around dinero to take all of that off your hands and leave you to your other more familiar pursuits of pleasure. ;)

Tarot is used as a form of divination. It's like reading bones or stones or runes. Tons of ways to do it. Some I know use it as daily lesson kinda thing. Shrugs

As I was perusing the packages I noticed that the African set had less cards as well as another, I cannot remember offhand which. Most of the rest have about the same amount and I think they are pretty similar. Druid deck! That was the other with a lesser amount of cards.

I was going to start with craigslist. I live in a large enough city, there is bound to be some interest!

The daily divination is very common with tarot readers from what I am beginning to understand!

I haven't read them in a long time. Each deck has a theme (the mass produced ones) and for the older 'real decks' they have a history which affects how they are read and translated.

I still have my old deck from my early twenties its a "Crow" deck because the Crow was my familiar back when I was really into that stuff.

There is a crow deck in here. I used to have a deck, it burned in the fire in which I lost almost everything.

I had a deck way back in the day. Not a crow. It was the one that fit me. It was not a mass production by the way.
Oh and FYI there are different spreads(ways to lay out the cards) you can use to read then. Some folks pull one card a day. Some do a cross. There are tons of them. It's all about finding what you like and works best for you. Try them all! :D

The african set may purposefully have fewer cards by the way. A lot of the tarot decks are based on the cultures they come from. the more traditional like the Crow, are more European have 13 main cards and 4 Houses with 10 cards in each house. Look through them. see what you like. What pulls you. Never know what the cards hold.

Oh then you already know the drill. I studied theology for the part of 20 years. Then I got a life. lol

I am really excited now lol! I was afraid to get a new deck after my last one burned...thought I may have some bad juju. I know that people are fiercely protective of these things if they are true believers... If I had been there when the fire started of course the first thing I would have saved would have been my tarot deck!

Cock gazer!!!!

What's your point? ;)

We may just have to have an actual conversation one day!

Hey if you're gonna get into it I say go all the way! Aura reading, Scything, bone reading, tea leaves. I have tried a lot. More out of curiousity than anything else.

I met a lady this weekend that photographs ghosts, auras, and orbs. She was pretty neat, although I was a little skeptical.

I have seen a round deck, once.

The artwork on the cards can be creative and beautiful.

Thoughts-

Story telling is not harmless.
Something will be instilled.
Human beings are susceptible to self deception/ misdirection, to being pulled off of a path that is beneficial.

Blunt statement- A brief curiosity, satisfied ? Wisps of fantasy and fun.
Going deep into it ?
It is a tool, but some tools have sharp edges.

You are fucking with your unconscious, subconscious
dream states.

You peer into the abyss, the abyss peers into you.
The medium is the message.
Be careful, and be clear about what you want/ do not want.
Be careful about what you invite into your mind/ your life.
Watch your step, choose to embark, or choose not to.
This is a choice.

Is this the direction you wish to travel ?
Is there a knowledge source that would be a better choice for you?
(Personal preferences ? Traditions familiar to you.)

or

Do you have a purpose, in mind ?

A way to focus, examine, discover, sort, explore your thoughts, your life, your direction, choices available to you, alternatives that are available to you...

PS- Open a running conversation with the former owner.

PSS-
Out of print, rare, limited editions...
Money, bay-bee!
