So, the newest tallest Skyscraper opened its doors today. Whadda think?

Dubai opened the world's tallest skyscraper Monday in a blaze of fireworks, then added a final flourish: It renamed the half-mile-high tower for the head of neighbouring Abu Dhabi, whose billions bailed out Dubai amid last year's financial crisis.

Long known as Burj Dubai -- Arabic for "Dubai Tower" -- the building rises 2,717 feet (828 metres) from the desert. The $1.5 billion "vertical city" of luxury apartments and offices and a hotel designed by Giorgio Armani also plans to have the world's highest mosque (158th floor) and swimming pool (76th floor).
Rest of the story here.

I wonder how long it's going to take before someone climbs it? Or jumps off it? ;)

Well, it does look like the tip is less of a target for an airplane than the twin towers were. Seems like we are learning something in the construction business. I wish them all the best of luck with it.

with that much glass in it, I'd have thought it would be a continuous effort, like painting the Forth Bridge. Just get to the bottom, have a cup of tea then start again. . . . . . . .

Not for me thanks

it probably never rains there so you never have to clean the windows there is nothing to see anyway but sand

It looks dangerously unstable to me.

That's because it's a multistage rocket booster set to launch Arabs to Mars. They are tired of white sand and figured they would corner the market on importing red sand. :D

Wait 'til; the power goes out. It's a long way down for a glass of water.

And they build that beast even though Dubai is bankrupt and had to be bailed out by Abu Dabi? What's with that?

Well, they weren't bankrupt when they started building it. In fact, they were riding high when they started, and apparently sold most of the spaces, though many bought them for investment purposes  rather than as residences.

They pretty stopped much of the finishing touches once he financial crisis hit. But they had the bulk of it done by the time it hit.

That's the most impressive erection I've seen since I put my pants on.

My grandfather invented one of the patents used in skyscraper window washers, but the company he worked for at the time got all of the credit :(

That is so wrong! Do you know what a company makes on washing those windows? Let's see, the only one I knew personally (management) made *counting fingers* ...four digits more in their salary than I.

And I was thinking about learning slacklining for fun! wtf

Does look kinda cool though, the design, from below. lol

I'm wondering if the hotel room prices are crazier than the $25,000 per night cost at the Burg el-Arab.

All kinds of Engineer problems come to my mind thinking about this building. First, how the hell do they get water to the upper floors. The best pumps in the world will do 40 floors. The sanitary drains have to be massively large with that many people using the toilets and the electrical requirements fo that building would require a sizable percentage of output of Boulder Dam.
