Man with marijuana tucked behind ear asks PSL cop for directions

PORT ST. LUCIE — A 20-year-old ended up in jail Wednesday when the police officer whom he asked for directions noticed a marijuana "blunt" tucked behind his ear, police say.

Maurice Stuckey, of Dolton, Ill., was arrested on a charge of marijuana possession.

While on foot patrol, Officer Matthew J. Wood noticed Dolton pull his red Chryslter two-door into the convienience store parking lot at 1651 N.W. St. Lucie West Blvd. at about 3:30 p.m.

Dolton walked into the store and approached Wood, asking for directions.

Seeing the "blunt," a cigar that has been hollowed out and re-filled with marijuana, Wood asked Dolton to step outside, his report stated.

Wood inquired about the "blunt." Dolton told him it contained marijuana, the report stated.

A search of Dolton's car turned up a plastic bag with five grams of marijuana in a purse on the driver's side floor board.

Police say Dolton admitted the bag of marijuana was his.

Dolton was held at St. Lucie County Jail until about 12:45 a.m., when he posted $500 bond.

That was a bit silly, but my heart goes out to him.

Do you really get put in jail for that over there? :(

A large part of the prison population in the US is for marijuana possession. Or so I understand.

*shakes head*

What a waste of the taxpayers' money. Are stoners really a threat to society?

Some would say yes, many would say no. There's been a movement here in the states for quite some time to legalize marijuana. Naysayers point out marijuana as being a 'gateway' drug that leads to the use of cocaine, heroin, etc.

More than half the people I know actively smoke pot. I don't, but it's not because of any legal or moral stance. I just can't stand the smell of the stuff, nor how it makes me feel.

Regarding the report, though . . . at least the guy wasn't stupid enough to argue with the officer.

The naysayers are presenting an old and ludicrous argument. (1) It's never been proven to be a gateway drug, (2) it would have to be so absolutely, positively in every case for their argument to work. If an alcoholic goes onto such things as heroin, that implies that the alcohol is a gateway drug. But we don't ban alcohol because it doesn't make EVERYONE a heroin addict. The same should go for marijuana.

Most people who still have some bizarre idea of keeping marijuana illegal have a bias against it pretty much as people who have drunks in their families have a bias against alcohol. A full-time stoner can ruin his life and his brain cells, making members of his family hate marijuana...but making the stuff illegal isn't going to stop the stoner--and making it legal could actually help him as once it's legal it can be regulated and taxed.

I've known regular marijuana smokers who function perfectly, and many who smoked now and then for a while, then gave it up--and one guy who did ruin his life by relying on it. But I rather think he was doomed to ruin it with something; marijuana was just the drug he happened to pick. Either way, he didn't go onto anything stronger.

As for me, I've never smoked any simply because I don't want to inhale any kind of smoke into my lungs. But I like the smell.

Blech. It reminds me of Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage. Don't ask me why, it just does.

I used to have a personal bias against stoners. They were always the lazy guys in school who never really did anything. Got bad grades, never cut their hair, went everywhere on a skateboard and wore the same damn clothes every day.

Then I realized that the only difference between them and me was that I didn't smoke pot. Well, that, and . . . I actually got good grades. ;)

I have a few friends on the SAPD. I know from them that they won't always arrest someone if they have a small amount of marijuana on them. Most of the time, arrests are only made because there is a 'significant amount' that suggests intent to distribute.

That tells me that even the law enforcement community is somewhat lenient toward marijuana. I'm fairly certain that within a decade or so, pot will be legal.

But it will take many more years than that before it is accepted as a legal substance.

I'm not sure I want it to be 100% legal. Decriminalised, like in the Netherlands, yes. But if it's completely legalised the government will tax it up to the hilt (just like they're still doing with cigarettes), and probably prohibit some strains, giving us much less choice.

If I want to get high off my tits once in a blue moon, I enjoy the fact that I can buy something that'll do that after a couple of tokes. It's the same as drinking wine with your dinner each day, and having a glass of whiskey on a Saturday night.

Thinking about it, though, if alcohol were a new drug it would have been banned outright.

If pot goes legal in the US, you can bet your ass it will be taxed like you wouldn't believe. Ironically, that will lead to dealers selling the same stuff at a lower rate. As far as strains, I am sure the 'quality' of legal marijuana will be low. But it will be legal, which will make it attractive.

As for the rest of your comments . . . I got stuck on the 'high off my tits' part. :p Damn, does that bring all sorts of images to mind . . . .
