"Yeah I'm runnin' down a dream, da-da-da-da-da-da, that never would come to me, da-da-da-da-da-da, workin' on a mystery, da-da-da-da-da-da..."
Ethan Dorff sang along with the stereo as he mopped the floor in his living room. Cleaning certainly wasn't among his favorite things to do, but the music helped and he didn't want the place to be a mess when he was going to have people over. Sure, they were friends, and had been for years, but still.
"Ah, there we go." Ethan put the mop in the bucket and looked over the wooden floor, the thin coat of water on it reflecting the lights. "Finally done." Ethan lived in a small house by himself where the bottom floor consisted of the kitchen, the living room and the guest bathroom. Upstairs was his bedroom and a guest bedroom which served as his office. He also had a basement, but right now it was mainly used for storage. He had plans of turning it into a man cave, but it wasn't anything he had decided on yet.
Ethan did quite well for himself. He was only 27 years old, but he was good at stock trading and did that for a living. He had been offered jobs trading stocks, but he didn't feel like it. He knew it would be completely different from what he did and he didn't want the pressure. He was content with doing it on a much smaller scale, he still earned more money than he could spend. Not that he had a lavish lifestyle, but money was rarely an issue to him.
Despite his success and leisurely lifestyle, there was one thing he wanted more than anything: a girlfriend. Despite being a pretty good-looking guy and generally likeable he just didn't ignite that 'spark' with women. Fact was that it had been five years since his last relationship, and she had only been his second girlfriend ever. And then there was... Destiny.
Destiny was an old friend since high school, and despite her being two years younger than him they had hit it off almost immediately and became good friends. It didn't take long for Ethan to develop feelings for Destiny, but he didn't dare to tell her. He was afraid that she would reject him and that it would ruin their friendship.
That was, until a week ago. After more than 10 years he decided that he would tell her since he was pretty sure that she felt the same way. He had butterflies in his stomach when he told her, and he was so happy that he finally mustered up the courage to do it.
... and then, she rejected him. Quite brutally. Ethan had been crushed, the love of his life didn't feel the same way about him. They agreed to stay friends, but he still drenched his sorrows in beer that night with another friend who managed to cheer him up. It just wasn't meant to be, and even though it hurt, it wasn't the end of the world.
Ethan pondered this as he grabbed a beer from the fridge. Fact was that it was Destiny and the other friend that was coming over tonight to watch a movie and drink some beer. Ethan hadn't met Destiny since then, and he was a little nervous. They had agreed to be friends and they didn't want things to be weird between them, but Ethan couldn't help but wonder why she wasn't interested in him. He had almost been certain that she was, had he misinterpreted her that badly?
"Eh, fuck it. Don't think too much about it." he muttered to himself as he took a sip of his beer. "Tonight's supposed to be fun, so lets keep it that way." He nodded for himself and glanced at the clock. "They should be here soon." He opened a cupboard above the sink and grabbed a bowl and a bag of potato chips, emptying the contents of the bag into the bowl.
