Amelia Stroud had grown up in a world of privilege created by her father. His fortune was so vast that his three children and two ex-wives would never be able to spend it. His business empire spanned from bakeries, restaurant to high end resorts. The Stroud name meant luxury and wealth. Amelia, or Amy, as she preferred to be called, tried to make a life outside of her father’s purview. She had used her mother’s last name when she enrolled in college and she had planned on using it when she started her job after she graduated. However, it hadn’t worked. Her father’s influence reached everywhere.
She worked for a small boutique hotel. She had her degree in business and minored in hospitality. She loved the hotel business but she didn’t want to work for her father like her two older brothers. It enraged her father at first, but he was just beginning to relent.
That was until her older brother had almost been snatched off of the street in San Francisco. He had been there on business. Three men in ski masks, had poured out of a panel van and tried to grab him. An off duty cop ended the kidnap attempt but the men got away. Her father had been on a rampage. He had left her multiple messages. He had sent a car for her and it wasn’t leaving until she agreed to meet her father at his office.
She left her office and got into the car with a bang of the back door. She tucked her long dark hair behind her ear. She made eye contact with her father’s driver.
“I am sorry he sent you, Dennis.” She offered with a smile. Amy was a pretty young woman. She had big brown eyes. She didn’t flaunt it but her figure was slim. She ran six miles every morning. She tried her best to be perfect, but she knew she would never meet people’s expectations of her.
The ride out to her father’s home was nerve wracking. She knew her father would prefer if she lived in his penthouse instead of her apartment. She worried he would try to control her life again. Dennis pulled the car to a stop. She thanked him for the ride and made her way into the house.
Her high heels clattered against the marble floor. Her father was pacing in his study.
“Amelia. You shouldn’t have made me send Dennis to fetch you.” His voice was icy, but underneath there was a heat of emotion.
“Dad, please. You are overeacting.”
Mr. Stroud banged his fist on his desk.
“Amelia. Enough.” His voice was right on the edge of shouting. Amy stood absolutely still. Her father rarely showed so much emotion. “I am not going to risk your life, so that you can play at having a normal life. I have hired someone to protect you, until this threat is …. Neutralized.”
Amy just shook her head in disbelief. She did not need someone to look out for her. Her hotel had great security and she was careful.
“Dad, please…. Don’t do this. I will be careful.” But he was unrelenting. Amy sat down in the formal chair before her father’s desk and waited to see what sort of man her father had hired to watch over her.
