1. When the USA left Syria, Putin was delighted - that left Russia and Iran as the major influences in Damascus. Russia however has been very concerned about Iran's regional ambitions which competed with its own.
2. When the General was assassinated, Russia said little but clearly Iran is in Turmoil and the Russians are delighted their regional rival for influence in Damascus has been diminished.
3. Trump/Pompeo did not consult with their allies so obviously Moscow too would not have been consulted prior to the event.
4. In the absence of an agreed reason within the administration (Esper v Trump) it is going to slowly dawn on folks that the main beneficiary from the assassination is Putin's Russia - not the USA. The further confusion caused by the aircrash debacle would be icing on the cake for the Russians.
And it seemed like such a good idea at the time?
