‘Era of epic corruption’: Internet eviscerates House Republicans for killing ethics committee

After Donald Trump’s promise to “drain the swamp,” House Republicans have essentially neutered the ethics watchdog in Congress.

Even Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi mocked the hypocrisy of the GOP. “Evidently, ethics are the first casualty of the new Republican Congress,” Pelosi said.

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) was furious when appearing Tuesday morning on “New Day,” asking, “I mean, is there any American out there who thinks Congress is too ethical?”

Under the new rules, the investigatory committee would be prevented from getting tips from whistleblowers, they will be required to stop investigations upon request, henceforth, they cannot release anything to the public and won’t be able to refer anything to the police.

Elections have consequences.

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) told CNN on Tuesday that he and other Democrats were “completely blindsided” by the GOP’s vote on Monday night, and he said that he was appalled that it was the very first thing they did after getting back to work this week.

“I mean, is there any American out there who thinks Congress is too ethical?” Moulton asked incredulously. “Donald Trump and the Republicans say they are going to drain the swamp and the very first thing they do is dismantle our outside ethics watchdog!”

When asked by CNN host Alisyn Camerota why he thought the GOP would make such a move, he gave the obvious answer: That they want to get away with doing unethical things.

“I guess what they have on their agenda might run into trouble with ethics,” he said. “I don’t know what else could be the reason, but we’re going to stand up to this just like we’re going to stand up to all the things that Republicans want to do that are bad for the American people, and clearly this is getting off to a really bad start.”

Day One of the new Congress, and this is the Pubs' first priority.

It's only going to get worse.

No warning.

No notice.

No debate.

House Republicans, overriding their top leaders, voted Monday to significantly curtail the power of an independent ethics office set up in 2008 in the aftermath of corruption scandals that sent three members of Congress to jail.

The House Republicans’ move would take away both power and independence from an investigative body, and give lawmakers more control over internal inquiries.

In place of the office, Republicans would create a new Office of Congressional Complaint Review that would report to the House Ethics Committee, which has been accused of ignoring credible allegations of wrongdoing by lawmakers.

That worked out well. One day of Congress, one total failure. As I said a few weeks ago, at least it will be fun to watch.

Let us collect the names of those who voted for it.
