Me too, I'm trying to find a good story hook to start off the year but I'm drawing blanks. Not really blanks but having a hard time getting it out of me. What is your creative process?

My creative process?

I look at the up coming contests, then the categories I need to write in, and then a glance at my story ideas. (I’ve got lots.) Last year I also looked at the immunity Sparks to see if anything “sparked”.

Then I start writing. At least once last year (In the Box) I didn’t even know if the main character was male or female until I was more than a thousand words in. I am often surprised by what crawls out of my mind.

Right now I’m working on three stories. A 750 word masturbation story, a group sex valentines story and a continuation of the Buckeye story that I have been promising myself for over a year. That one didn’t turn out like I intended at all. In fact I thought I was writing Buckeye - Truth or Dare when I started and just barely changed the title so I basically still owe myself the story I intended to write. The story I wrote develops some characters that I introduced in Buckeye - the Exhibition that I intend to use in Buckeye - Truth or Dare.

However, the other thing I am working on is a way to write for every category using a single main character. I’ve got an idea for how to make half of the categories work. There are a few that I am having trouble working into a cohesive whole: NonHuman, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, How To, Humor & Satire, Letters & Transcripts, Non-Erotic and Reviews and Essays.

Assuming that I can actually do the 15 stories that I have seeds for I should have lots of loose ends and story hooks that I can use to bring some of those into the year-long storyline.

Another part of my challenge is going to be making the stories stand alone and not chapters so that I can actually enter them in the contests.

Unfortunately none of the stories I’m presently working on fit in the framework of “the same mc in every category”, and I still owe myself the continuation stories for Buckeye and Airtight.

Although if I don’t try to write all the stories in a coherent chronological order I could make the Masturbation story use the same mc since I haven’t named him yet…

Bryan you seem to have a well thoughtout and precise process for success.

For sharing which it may spark ideas for others. And I use yesterday as an example. MB and I went tot he theater, the off broadway musical Clue was playing. I look in the crowd, I look at the woman’s or rarely the men, and start thinking what would they be like as a character. Then I saw a younger, 30ish couple and it sparked. Now I have my On The Job character. I know I am weird.

I have near,y fifteen stories in draft and at least nine outlines of stories for this calendar year. To build on. I have ideas I just done know what my characters look like … yet. We see Wicked in two weeks 😉 I can’t wait

Yeah, I usually start writing with a loose idea in mind and see where the story takes me, like you Bryan. Lately I have been in a rut with ideas still around but I can't be bothered with the 2000 words I need before the action starts. Some years you have all the momentum and some years you can't finish even one story. Hope it turns this year.

????

So just jump to the action and write that first.

Writing the action will reveal details that need to be filled in with the start of the story.

Separately, a small portion of stories I’ve seen here (and in the real world) start at the action and then rewind to show how the action developed.

Here is another idea: pick a category and go read a couple of high scoring stories. Then go find the lowest scoring story in the category and use that as a catalyst to jumpstart your own story.

(If you do this try to pick a story by an author that hasn’t published in a long time and of course don’t tell anyone what your inspiration was. Nobody needs to know that.)
