Inspired by the dieter's thread ... I'm kinda curious: Do you take nutritional supplements? Some critics claim they're a waste of money, not bioavailable, etc. Others swear by 'em. How 'bout y'all?

I work for GNC, read both Men's Health and Men's Fitness, and have taken a few products (not the bodybuilding stuff, but...).

I can't say I've taken anything that hasn't worked. The Fish Body Oils are pretty effective at enhancing mood.

P.s. Pssst. We sell Enzyte.

I take Oil of Evening Primrose each day, and Glucosamine Sulphate for my joints.

If I was gonna swear by any one supplement, it'd be omega-3s (fish oils).

I've been told not to take any "hard" vitamins, meaning aim for powders and for Gelcaps. Other than that...

And I've been told Glucosamine is very effective. Also, Melatonin (or is it melanonin?) is supposed to help you sleep.

Melatonin.

My kids get this when they're ultra hyper around bedtime. It works. It's what the body secretes in response to nightfall.

Basically, all the supplements have some truth behind them, but it depends on more than just the supplement. Protien powders work. I know this. But all supplements are just additions to your daily routine. I've heard people swear by red Bull, but they do very little for me. They're uppers, and mostly caffeine, and my caffiene intake.. Well, let's just say I'm pretty much immune to its effects. lol

no supplements are substitutes for food, is what I mean. A shake works, but a chicken sandwich is better. ;)

Do you notice a difference with this?

Yep, or I wouldn't keep taking it.
I HATE taking pills.
Its bad enough with the ones I HAVE to take, doc's orders, but to voluntarily take something I don't have to......speaks for itself.

I take it for my knees, both duff (torn cartilage in one, torn ligament in the other, neither have completely healed). It was recommended by my orthopaedic consultant. He called it black magic, but told me to go to my health store, buy some and take it.

I did. That was 3 years ago.

Yeah, Glucosamine in the Amino Acid that does the most to build and repair cartilage. Black Magic or not.

Take that as you will.

Taters are a starch.
As is corn.

Hate to disappoint.

The thing with supplements is that if you're going to take them, you should get them from a health food store (Nature's Way and Nature's Plus are both very good) because they are going to be more bioavailable.

If you're dieting heavily (like trying to only consume 1000 per day, etc) a good multi-vitamin is essential to your health. Not a bad idea to add in an iron supplement too, at that point. Floridix or Herbal Iron are both very good, high bioavailable, and non-constipating.

Fish oils are good too, as is the Evening Primrose Oil (especially for the ladies) that Mat was talking about.

Have fun everyone!

Oh! One more thing... B complex is great for moods, water retention and some memory stuff. But watch out, it'll turn your pee bright yellow because it's water soluable.

i used to play hockey (goalie) and i destroyed my knees. all the stuff i saw guys take (from supplements to painkillers) scared me away from taking anything that didnt come with a waitress.
but in my old age i think i could maybe use the Glucosamine Sulphate for torn cartilage and torn ligaments.
thanks for the tip.

Starch, vege... Fuck it, they're carbs. For my diet, that's all that matters.

And Fish oils'll do that too, but it seems like it's more green than yellow.

If you take Glucosamine you also need a bio-active Sulfate to activate it. Far too many people take the non-sulfate type and wonder why it doesn't work.

I take the non-sulfate type when eating hugh sulfur foods ( eggs, beans, etc.) to reduce the flatulence stench.

I take vitamin E damn near religiously.

It's supposed to help guard against breast cancer, but I started taking it primarily because my skin and hair is so damn dry....it helps.

Glucosamine Sulfate... I was trying to think of that all day. I kept getting Chondritin (sp?) in my head instead.

Now, it can ease "flatulence stench"?
