It's a curious thing that when Friday 13th comes around, normally rational and sane people get all superstitious and funny.
Personally, I am not superstitious in the slightest. I don't believe in any of it.
How many people here adhere to superstitious practices, like knocking on wood, throwing spilled salt over their shoulder, or even rubbing the Budha's belly?

FYI many superstitions started due to religion.

Friday has always beeen considered unllucky to the point of ships (I am refering to the time of sailing ships like the 14-17 centuries, not modern day) having to pay a premum insurance rate if they set sail on Fri or stay in port an extra day. Friday is the traditional day it is believed Jesus Died.

13 is unlucky because that is the number of people present at the last supper.

Spilling salt is believed to atract the devil, so people began throwing salt over their shoulder hoing to get it in the devils eye so they could clean up the spilt salt. Throwing over left shoulder is because most people were right handed.

Walking under ladders is also a Christian because when ladder leans against a building it makes a triangle whch early christians used to explain the trinity. So walking under a ladder was breaking the trinity.

Crossing your fingers is taken from the Cross. If you look at crossed fingers it looks like a cross.

My family comes from sailing... my father made sure there was a coin under the mast-step, nobody was allowed to whistle, bananas were absolutely forbidden, and we never set sail on a Friday.

In some cultures salt is too sacred to toss around. I was cleaning off a table after a quick non-prof staff meeting lunch and was chastised for letting some salt hit the floor. The Serbian guy said to leave it on the table so that someone else can use it and he dabbed his bread in it.

But yeah... the whole Friday the 13th thing is kinda lame.

In numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness, as reflected in the twelve months of the year, twelve hours of the clock, twelve gods of Olympus, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, the 12 successors of Muhammad in Shia Islam, etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness. There is also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper or a Norse myth, that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one of the diners.

My daughter was born on the 13th. Growing up, she always had the best birthday parties as she got to do the spooky stuff :)

I have a black cat and I throw hats on the bed.

I have a black cat too. Actually, she's deep chocolate brown, but close enough!
I don't understand why people continue with superstitious things. Does 'touching wood' and other such things actually work?

For me, the 12th has been unlucky. I was supposed to go visit my daughter, but she had to cancel. <sad mom face>

Can you shut up now?

Bear in mind that if there's good or bad luck associated with a day of the calendar, that's not just your luck, it's the whole world's. It's Friday the 13th for everybody, everywhere. But, it's happened before, and the world survived.

It's 4pm Thursday.

You're clearly disoriented.

I don't mind the day, just stay away from abandoned camp sites centered around lakes where a ton of people tend to go missing and you'll do fine.

My brother was born on Friday the 13th. My parents left me with my patriarchal grandparents, whom I never wanted to stay with, because my dad's family is weird and abusive. So, my mom gave birth around 8 or 9, and my gramps came over to get me, and they had drugged the hell out of me. They kept saying that I was sick and they had given me some cold medicine, but I wasn't sick, I was hyper, and they had drugged me good to keep me quiet on adult pain meds. I was high as a kite. I was three. It was awesome. Knocked myself right on on the way to the hospital though.

Now he's an arrogant prick. But very often, his B-day would fall on Friday. Not this year, I guess, because it's next month.

I've never been very superstitious, but I live in Appalachia, and everyone here is fairly superstitious. I really wanna keep my cat's kitten, whom I have named Magic, because she's gorgeous and solid black. I've always liked black cats- not because of any 'superstitious thing' but because I'm a brunette to. And because they're harder to give away and trust that folk are taking proper care of them. Black cats are often kidnapped and killed here- especially around Halloween. People are dicks.
