Okay, so I've been conversing with this guy who works in the film industry. He was a script reader working at William Morris and Icon Productions and my mom knew the guy because he briefly lived at the apartment she manages. I have a series of screenplays I've been developing and sent him a draft of the first script.

He said he really liked it and we've been talking back and forth for several months about him connecting me with people he knows in the industry to possibly get the first script sold. This is what he recently wrote me in response to my request that, if he wasn't being honest about his positive assessment of my script, to feel free to admit it:

"I’m not a screenwriter or development exec, so I am not in a position to tell truly give a critical assessment of your script. However, I can tell you this – I did a TON of script coverage at icon Productions and William Morris, and your script was better than EVERY script I read at both of those companies. I can also tell you from a marketing and distribution perspective (which is my expertise) that the genre you have chosen and your plans for graphic novel development is the right way to be thinking. I’ve had plenty of people give me scripts to read, and it has always been a challenge to let them down gently. I was pleasantly surprised when I read your script, and I encourage you to keep moving forward. I think you have the right attitude coming into the game and my only intention is to help in whatever small ways that I can. You aren’t wasting my time, and if I have any reason to be cautious it is because I don’t want any of my contacts to waste your time."

I expect nothing to happen with my script, really. I don't think it'll sell, but it is pretty cool to have someone in an industry you respect and derive so much pleasure from offering words of praise to your work. I'm so excited!

Well done! That's wonderful news, and beyond wonderful that it comes from someone with some actual connections. Congratulations on a genuinely exciting step forward.

Ask him if he knows a good agent! :)

Trust me, I was real apprehensive when I first heard about the guy, but my mom knew him and I did some research on him and he checked out. He worked for William Morris and a few other talent agencies so he has connections within the top 5 agencies in Los Angeles. I was asking him about getting representation from an agent, but he said that if you aren't already a working professional screenwriter they don't even consider repping you.

The guy he wants to put me in contact with is managing a new agency that caters to younger talent. So, I'm crossing my fingers.

You give all of us aspiring writers hope. Pulling for you - good luck and keep us posted.

A  for luck and positive outcomes from the good little witch.

I dunno. Kinda sounded like he blew raspberries all over it to me...

Stop looking at me like that.

I was just kidding!!!

Basically, it sounds like you think it sounds: that from his vantage point it's very good (and certainly not the drivel he's used to getting from all the others), but unfortunately he's not in the position to give you any kind of promise or assurance.
Still, pretty damn decent. Good job, killer.
A little thorny rose, just for you: :rose:
('cuz I know you like the pain)

Thanks, all! You, too, Blue, for the pain! :p

What does kinda suck, though, is that when he was working at William Morris, he could've repped me. :( But it is cool that he's offered to accept any future script I write and attempt to share it with his contacts in the industry.

Just remember: "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh-darnit, people like me."
