Okay, so I've been conversing with this guy who works in the film industry. He was a script reader working at William Morris and Icon Productions and my mom knew the guy because he briefly lived at the apartment she manages. I have a series of screenplays I've been developing and sent him a draft of the first script.
He said he really liked it and we've been talking back and forth for several months about him connecting me with people he knows in the industry to possibly get the first script sold. This is what he recently wrote me in response to my request that, if he wasn't being honest about his positive assessment of my script, to feel free to admit it:
"I’m not a screenwriter or development exec, so I am not in a position to tell truly give a critical assessment of your script. However, I can tell you this – I did a TON of script coverage at icon Productions and William Morris, and your script was better than EVERY script I read at both of those companies. I can also tell you from a marketing and distribution perspective (which is my expertise) that the genre you have chosen and your plans for graphic novel development is the right way to be thinking. I’ve had plenty of people give me scripts to read, and it has always been a challenge to let them down gently. I was pleasantly surprised when I read your script, and I encourage you to keep moving forward. I think you have the right attitude coming into the game and my only intention is to help in whatever small ways that I can. You aren’t wasting my time, and if I have any reason to be cautious it is because I don’t want any of my contacts to waste your time."
I expect nothing to happen with my script, really. I don't think it'll sell, but it is pretty cool to have someone in an industry you respect and derive so much pleasure from offering words of praise to your work. I'm so excited!
