Not only have I not had a cigarette in 24 hour but I also have fried myself, and am now a lovely shade of lobster red. Since I am quite fair skinned, its rather painful. I have some aloe vera but if anyone out there has any suggestions (and please don't tell me to use sunblock next time...) I would be interested to know...

and volunteers to help spread it on the parts I can't reach would also be helpful:D

Steep some tea bags...let them cool a bit them place the tea bags on your face....

Get some cooling gel/lotion for the rest of your body darlin...

Noxema by the handfuls works the best. I burnt myself so bad last year that I got sun poisoning and I am scarred.

Noxema was the only pain relief I had and I wore it 24/7.

Cold tomato is soothing to sunburn skin, just cut it in half and rub on the effected area's. Put your aloe vera in the fridge before you use it.
Cool baths also help.
If its too bad a trip to your doctor may be advised for some burn cream, or the chemist is likely to have some cream or gel with a numbing effect.
Good luck, I've been there and have no wish to repeat the experience.

Oh and wear sunscreen next time! :D

It is pretty great stuff, draws the burn out.
Also aloe vera does wonders, I found that the aloe vera gel works great on your face as well
Good luck, I hope you feel better soon!
And congratulations on not having that cigarette:)
It's hard to quit, I'm fighting it now

If you have an aloe plant or can get ahold of some. cut off some fresh.... what are they leaves?
Remove the outter skin
Slice them then rub it over your skin.. it has a great soothing & healing effect..

Tomatoes do help to relieve the pain, you can give it a try; but honestly you would do better to take yourself off to the chemist and get some proper gel.

Oooh a thread hijacking! I love it!

Hey, missed you too!
I'm up for chat, see you there! :)

Hijack over......sorry Rhyss!

I'm a blonde-haired whitey who grew up on the beach in San Diego in the days before people thought much about sunblock. I know all about sunburns.

Aloe vera, as pure as you can get it. Go to a health food store for the best stuff, if you don't have your own plant. Aloe Vera lotion, lotion that contains aloe vera in some small amount, isn't gonna do it. You need the real deal.

Slather it on thickly.

Dry it with a hairdryer set on the lowest (coolest) setting.

Now put another layer on. Yes, i know it takes a long time to do this.

Stay naked as much as possible. (I'm serious. Burned skin needs to be protected from infection and left alone to heal.)

Call me when it starts to peel. I love to pull loooooooong strips off. You can handle the flaky stuff yourself bur those strips...there's something kinda zenlike in pulling them off, don't you think?

Vinegar

actually works better than Noxema, believe it or not. I know, you think it smells horrible, but the smell dissipates fairly quickly as it evaportates. It works faster than Noxema and does the best job of anything I have found of pulling the burn out and removing the pain. Just soak a rag and blot it on. Grit your teeth and bare the smell, it will go away.

I have fair skin also, and last year I blistered, and vinegar was reccommended. I was in so much pain I tried it. Like magic!!

According to my licensed herbalist slices of raw potato work like a charm-
Don't know why but I know people who swaer by it.

any tea bags will do ...all the advice here is good..I would skip the cool bath thoguh..sounds like it might feel good but not...Good Luck Darlin....

And don't forget to take a couple of aspirin or tylenol or ibuprofin for the general pain. It won't help if you actually touch the burnt parts, but in a general kind of way--it'll help you sleep.

I've been going shirtless because the worst area is my chest, arms, shoulders and the tops of my thighs for some odd reason. I am hoping this will calm down by tomarrow morning when I have to put the shirt on and pretend to work.

I dunno about the zen thing, Cym...are you sure you just don't want a layer of my hide?:D

When you start to peel, can I pick the skin off? I love doing that :D

another woman that wants my hide...

(oh help!);)

I'm not disagreeing on the tomatoe thing

but doesn't it seem like that would burn? All the acid in tomatoes make my lips hurt (especially if they are chapped).

I don't know if I would want to try a tomatoe on a sunburn on my body..

Ohhhh! I don't do the fighting over men thing. He's all yours foxy.
;)

Seriously, the vinegar will make you pain free so you can bathe, wear a shirt, sleep...whatever.

You could try doing a vinegar bath, a cup of vinegar into a tub full of lukewarm water and soak in it for a while. Or lather natural yoghurt on your skin and then rinse it off in a cool shower. Oh and remember to drink a lot of water :)
