<<OOC: Role Taken>>

It was the beginning of a long summer vacation, or so it would seem for Ryan. You see it was his final summer home before he had to begin life in the real world. The scary real world, he was not sure he was ready for yet. You see he was leaving friends, family and everything that he knew and loved for the past 18 years. Ryan was the normal high school kid, if there was such a thing. He went to school, did a few extra activities just to help out, but the whole aspect of high school sports, and just did not interest Ryan. He didn’t understand the whole obsession with sport in high school, how at times it seemed to be bigger than academics. He went to school, came home with good grades, and hung out with his friends and family sometime that was it.

He never had girls hanging off his 6 foot 2 inch frame in high school, mostly because he had sort of indifferent attitude towards the whole thing. He would have been able to get a girlfriend if he really wanted to; with his shoulder length brown hair, semi muscular body, and his blue eyes. He just really did not care to get involved with a girl in high school, especially with all the drama his friends seemed to have with their girlfriends, who mostly seemed to inhabit the slutty category, and well he never wanted a slut, he of course wanted someone who loved sex, but also someone who wasn’t going to sleep with the whole school either.

He loved his family but he knew that would not be what bugged him about leaving the most. He was mostly worried about leaving Sandra. She was his best friend, well since he could remember. Sandra was just like Ryan when it came to school, go there, do the work that was needed and then head home, she had no interest in any of the fancy stuff that some kids seemed to be so interested in during high school, she had her own interests and well the school didn’t cater to them.

Sandra was also one of the most beautiful girls in high school as well, at least in terms of the overall package. Her 5 foot 3 inch body did not need a lot of makeup, or certain outfits to show how beautiful she was. Her face said it all for her. She had the mostly beautiful blue eyes, someone could get lost staring into them, and the rest of the face just looked so sexy. She had blonde hair that flowed down to just above her hips, and she had the perfectly shaped body, not skin and bones, just a wonderful looking body, but any time a guy came on to her, she just would turn them down, knowing that someone would have been killed by her parents if she said yes.

There was abit of tension between them at times, especially when they both went through the beginning of puberty, and well begun getting attracted to the opposite sex, but they got through it, and still seemed to do everything together, to a certain extent at least. He had an idea of what they could do for a final thing together; one last burst of fun, Ryan knew he was going to a University on the east coast, Sandra on the other hand didn’t tell Ryan where she was going, and he had no idea why, they didn’t usually keep secrets from each other.

Well, for the most part they did not keep secrets from each other. Ryan for the longest time had a crush on Sandra, and never got around to telling her about it, for multiple reasons. The main reason was the fact that they were such good friends that he felt changing it by admitting that he cared for her more than just a friend would ruin everything. The other concern was her parents. They were very protective of their daughter. Sheltering her would have been an understatement; it was more that they kept her on another world.

The whole sheltering aspect was what scared Ryan the most about asking Sandra if she would like to do this trip across Canada with him. Sure her parents knew him forever, and trusted him, but he was still a guy. They would be concerned about her being gone all summer with Ryan, but Ryan was getting ahead of himself thinking of that aspect, he still needed to see if Sandra would want to go with him to begin with, and well he was going to ask her when they were at the mall, just hanging out like they did any normal Friday evening. It might be both of theirs last Friday in town though, for a very long time, since the trip was going to take all summer if Sandra said yes.

Sandra slammed the door to her house and shook her head which made her long hair spray attractively around her lovely face. She had stormed out of the house angry at her parents, of course they were mad at her too. She had just told them she did not intend to go to University and they were not happy about it one bit. But now she was eighteen a woman and she planned to run her own life.

They wanted to know her plans and she told them. Both their mouths had dropped open when she said she had been saving her money for years to take a trip across Canada and when she got back she would figure out her plans. Her Father had roared and her Mother was still crying.

Finally one of them she was not quite sure which one it was declared she should ask Ryan to go with her because he could protect her. She became livid, and told them she could protect herself and then she stormed out of the house ending the discussion she hoped for good.

The very idea that Ryan would want to take this kind of trip, he had plans of his own. He was going to University and would need all his money for that. She had even kept her plans from her best friend just in case he had the same reaction as her parents. She never would impose her will on him as her parents had done to her all her life. She wanted freedom and freedom was what she was going to have.

She had been walking so fast she amazed herself when she found herself in front of Ryan's house and he was outside waiting for her. She quickly took a deep breathe and opened the gate to his yard and smiled as she walked up to him. She did not realize her face was still flushed with anger.

"Hi Ryan, are you ready to go to the mall"

Ryan looked and saw Sandra open the gate, just as he was finishing up washing his car, he didn’t want it to start the trip dirty after all. Ryan was lucky; his parents were able to provide for him real well. His university education was already paid for, the money in the bank ready to pay for each year. His mother and father were both doctors, so while they lived in Canada, they still had money to spend. His graduation present was a mustang convertible, a red one. Sure it meant they both couldn’t bring a lot of stuff, but he was planning on a road trip, why bring a lot of stuff on a road trip anyway.

“Almost ready Sandra, let me just clean up my mess from washing the car, and then we can be off to the mall, got a few things I want to pick up myself this time, rather than just hanging out.” He said smiling at her, and giving her a hug. He then noticed how angry her face looked. “Something wrong Sandra, your face is so red, like you ran here or you are pissed at something.” He asked her looking her in the eyes, pausing to wait for her answer before cleaning up his mess.

It just wasn’t like Sandra to appear so pissed off about things, usually she was the happy go lucky person, who wouldn’t let anything piss her off, now she looked generally pissed off. Sure she might have fought with her parents before and then come over to see him, but normally she was just in a foul mood not bright red. “Sandra if you want, you can tell me when we get to the mall, over a raspberry slushy, I know that’s your favorite flavor.”

It was such a temptation to vent to Ryan but if she did she would have to tell him everything. She did not want to put him on the spot to make him think he had to go with her on her trip. He had his plans set, college and she had her plans, runaway, well not exactly runaway, a trip, away, freedom. She smiled as he hugged her.

“Ah it’s nothing Ryan, the usual another fight with my parents, they still think I am a child, that don’t want to let go”

She looked at his car.

“This car is a beauty, I really love red and on a car it is the best. Go clean up while I droll on it”

She walked around the car looking at its lines and turned as he spoke.

“Sandra if you want, you can tell me when we get to the mall, over a raspberry slushy, I know that’s your favorite flavor.”

Sandra laughed.

“Your right I love raspberry slushy, it just may cool me down”

She watched as Ryan grab the bucket and cloths and go into the house. She thought for awhile and knew she would really miss her best friend.

Ryan could tell that she was holding something back. He had seen her after she fought with her parents before, and she normally wasn’t that pissed looking when she got over to his house, and normally would tell him most of the details about the fight, and well he usually calmed her down, and made her think about it rationally for a second or two. He placed the bucket back where it belonged and placed the soap under the sink tossing the cloths into the bucket. “Sweet three points,” he said to himself as the cloths dropped in the bucket.

He headed back outside and saw Sandra sort of drooling over the car, like she said she would, leaning against it waiting for her. He walked over to her, and held the keys out in front of her. “Hmm, you seem to love this car Sandra, you care to try driving it to the mall Sandra?” He asked smiling at her knowing she would jump at the chance. “You’ll have to deal with me looking for a few things at the store, something you’re not used to doing.” He said teasing her with the keys.

Ryan was just wondering now when he was going to ask her. He guessed if he asked her now, he would have no problem getting a yes, especially since how pissed she was at her parents today it seemed. He figured he was going to wait until she saw the sort of things he was buying, and see if her curiosity would get the better of her and she would ask what he was up to. He smiled, wondering what the road trip would be like with Sandra, going cross country with no worries what so ever, except school starting in two months.

As Sandra smiled and reached for the keys Ryan held them over her head, she laughed as she jumped for them. Her body bounced enticingly with each jump.

“Come on Ryan, have pity on a vertically handicapped person”

She laughed as he placed the keys into her hand and closed her hand gently over them. Ryan had a strange look on his face as she hugged him and kissed his cheek.

“Thanks buddy”

Sandra got in the driver’s side of the car tossing her long hair back with a snap of her neck. She was thrilled to drive Ryan’s car but also cautious, she did not have one of her own to practice on. She moved the car a bit slowly out of the driveway. This was going to be a slow trip.

“Ryan, why don’t you put some music on”

Sandra took 20 minutes for a 10 minute trip but Ryan did not seem to mind. As she parked the car, she handed the keys back to him.

“Thanks again Ryan, that was a treat”

She put her arm through his as they walked into the mall.

Ryan smiled, so Sandra was a good driver after all. She was abit cautious but he couldn’t blame her, he doubted she would have gone crazy anyway, not willing to risk hurting his car. He smiled seeing how Sandra placed her arm through his as they walked towards the mall. “So slushy first, or do you want to get my shopping out of the way first so we can just relax, and chill having a slushy talking about this that and everything.” He said smiling down at her.

Being with Sandra now, showed him just how much he was going to miss her come September. She was his best friend, they seemed to do everything together, from going to the mall to just hanging out at school. They did everything normal teenagers do, just always together, and well in a couple short months it was all going to be gone. Sure the road trip would happen first, but it was just going to be one last hurrah before they were separated.

Ryan had a rush of feelings go through his head, and immediately set them aside. In high school, he was always considered one of the luckiest guys in school. Everyone seemed to think no matter how much they both denied it, that the two of them were an item, a couple. They denied it from grade 7 all the way to grade 12. They did do everything together, go to dances, the movies just like a couple would, but they went just as friends. Ryan never really wanted more, afraid of losing his best friend or having to suffer the wraith of Mr. and Mrs. Locke for exposing their daughter to love. The sheltering of Sandra scared Ryan, worried about how it was going to be for Sandra out on her own at school but being so naive about the world. He knew that needed to change, at least partially during the road trip.

Sandra smiled at Ryan.

"Lets shop, I want to see how a college kid does it, I don't really need anything I already have my things packed...away"

She had almost slipped and told Ryan her plans. She would have to be careful not to drag him into her bid for freedom. He had more important things to considered than his friend taking a trip across Canada. She refused to spoil his life for him.

"Ok, show me what you need for college"

She grinned as he took her into a man's store.

Ryan paused for a second, trying to make sense of what Sandra said. “Sandra, you already have everything you need packed, and still with two months before we need to be there, interesting, I’m guessing your parents did that for you. I wish they would calm down about that, especially since you’re about to be off on your own at university, you never did tell me where you are going though Sandra. So where are you going?” He asked as they walked to the camping section of the store they entered.

“Actually, I’m getting everything I need except clothes when I get to university, don’t really want to lug it all across Canada with me after all.” He said smiling at her, as he picked out a tent which would be the right size for the two of them, along with the other odds and ends he needed for camping, a queen size air mattress, a couple sleeping bags, a stove, a lantern for starters, knowing he didn’t have a lot of space in his car, and with clothes still to come, he can’t get everything, just the bare minimum. He turned and smiled at Sandra, wondering what her reaction was going to be.

Ryan’s questions came fast and furious.

“I meant, packed away in my drawers, Ryan. No my parents did not help me with anything. How about we talk about where I am going when we have our slushy, ok.

“Actually, I’m getting everything I need except clothes when I get to university, don’t really want to lug it all across Canada with me after all.”

She watched him pick things he did not need in University. She just stood gaping at everything and then it struck her what he said.

“What do you mean about going across Canada”

Ryan shook his head. "You heard me correctly, I thought I told you I'm going to University in Nova Scotia, Dalhousie, remember." He said smiling at Sandra. "Well, I didn't tell you one thing, I'm taking the car with me to explore this country first, in the two months I have before school starts." He could see a change in the look of Sandra's eyes; it looked to be a combination of tears and something else, something he just couldn't place.

He looked at Sandra. “Now don’t cry my little one, because I have a question to ask you.” He said smiling at her again, wrapping an arm around her, placing a hand in front of them both. “Because wouldn’t you like to come with me, to explore this country, see everything this country has, with me.” He said looking at her, seeing the weird look beginning to dominate her facial expression. “What is it Sandra, is it something to say, you almost have this look that leads me to belief you’re going to burst out laughing any second because of something I said.” He thought for a moment, wondering why the look on her face. “Sandra what is it, I’m just asking you, I know your parents will probably never approve of you being away from them for all the summer, the hawks that they seem to be concerning your life.”

Sandra could not contain herself any more. She began to laugh and when she did she could not stop. Her eyes filled with tears and she doubled up with laughter. After what seemed like an eternity she got control of herself but one look at the shocked look on his face and she burst out laughing again. When control came back to her again, she began to talk.

"Listen, that is what the fight was about today. I told my parents, I was not going to the University but on a road trip across Canada. They weren't happy about it and definately wanted me to reconsider. They are dead against me taking this trip. They even suggested I ask you to come with me. Of course I didn't want to mess up your plans so I didn't tell you about what I was going to do. And then you ask me to go with you. It is amazing how much we think alike.

"Yes, I will go with you and I have money too. I have been saving for years to get my freedom and here it is. When the trip is over, you will be going to University and I will get a job"

Ryan stopped and looked at Sandra for a second, his mind completing forgetting about the fact she mentioned she wasn’t going to be going to university. “Oh wow, Sandra. That is crazy. Us having the same idea, I guess I can understand why you were so angry today, compared to normal. Your parents just never learned to let you go, and well now you’re leaving in one swift move.” He said leaning forward, and giving her a hug, still shocked they both had the same idea.

Ryan smiled at her, after the initial shock had passed. “So just how ready to go are you Sandra, are you all packed, or do you need to take care of all that, and what about camping gear?” He asked her smiling, as they were just standing in the middle of the store talking, the fit of laughter by Sandra attracting the attention of a few staff members, and fellow shoppers. “Because if you are all ready maybe we can hit the road after our slushy, and start the Sandra and Ryan adventure.” He said beaming as if he just came up with the name of a new hit show or something.

Ryan’s mind that wandered off into thought about a wide variety of different topics. “Oh my Sandra, we can get an apartment together, we can stay in the same place, two friends just living together, on their own for the first time.” Then his mind stopped. She wasn’t going to university if he heard her correct, Ryan paused, he wasn’t going to mention it now, but later when the time was more right, it was her choice after all, and well he might suggest university eventually he wasn’t going to force her into it. “Oh my Sandra, this road trip will be a blast now, do you have any objections to taking the convertible, or do you want to rent an RV and drive that, it’s your choice.

Sandra wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him, her breasts pressed against him. She was so happy.

"This is so wonderful, Ryan, do you realize I won't have to fight my way out of the house, they want me to go with you, why, I don't know. We can go straight to my house and tell my parents you agreed to go with me, a little lie but one that will make them let me go, today, right now, what about your parents will they allow you to go today. I am packed, I have a sleeping bag, I was planning to rough it, I mean really rough it but you have a tent, it will be like a small motel right"

She looked up into his face smiling, then pulled away realizing how it must look to all the people in the store. She flushed as she noticed some people watching them.

Ryan smiled at Sandra, seeing her get red as the people looked over at the two of them. “I have no idea what our route will be though Sandra, I just having a feeling we will just get in the convertible and go, just as long as we get to Nova Scotia eventually.” He said smiling at her. “Come on lets go get those slushies like normal, and call our parents. My parents will have my bags out on the porch, and you can tell your parents the good news that I’m going with you, which should make them abit more calm with you.”

He said as he went to the cash register and paid for the stuff they needed. They then walked down to the food court and Ryan paid for the two slushies as Sandra grabbed them a table. “So Sandra, do you have any specific places you want to see, or do you just want to go across country, stopping wherever and whenever something catches your interest.” He said smiling at her, happy that she was going to be coming with him, knowing how much better his summer will be because of it. “You think I should call the university as well, tell them I won’t be staying on campus anymore, so we get an apartment together?”

Sandra was looking down into her glass stabbing the slushy, the smile was still on her face as she listened to Ryan.

"I think we should just drive and stop wherever we want like gypsies, but if you had plans thats ok, I just want to be free and who better to be free with but my best friend"

She stabbed at the slushy once more as Ryan suggested they get an apartment together. She looked up in surprise.

"You want me to live with you Ryan, what a wonderful idea, a two bedroom place, plenty of space and great company, I love the idea but we cant tell my parents that one"

Her day was complete, to live with Ryan would be great, they could be like brother and sister.

"Yes, I like it"

Ryan smiled and nodded. “Then its settled, when you driving the first round, I’ll call the university, and tell them I don’t need the room anymore.” He said giving her a kiss, “So a nice trip across the country, with my best friend, and then living with her when we get there.” He said smiling at her, sliding the phone across the table. “Here call your parents, and tell them I’m going with you, and if you don’t mind call my parents as well to let them know to have my stuff out on the deck, because me and you are leaving on our trip today.” He said smiling at her.

His mind wandered again as Sandra picked up the phone. Wow, he couldn’t believe his luck, he was going to be on the road with his best friend, exploring the country, and then living with her at the end of the trip. He knew there would probably be tension building up between them during the trip, it was going to build with the two of them being so close together all the time. He grinned though, he was going to be on a trip with her, he was still going to try to keep his true feelings for her secret, and he didn’t want to ruin anything after all. He was going to try to enlighten her to everything in the world, break her out of her shell some. If she wanted something more, he would be willing to try it though, as long as they both felt they could still at least remain friends in the end.

Sandra called her parents excited that Ryan would go with her on the trip. She could hear their sigh of relief, they felt he could protect her. She told them to put her bags on the porch and if they wanted to wait for them to get home out there so she could give them a huge hug. They were so agreeable she had to smile. She hung up the phone.

"I can't believe they are the two people I fought with this morning"

She dialed Ryan's home and waited.

"Hi, this is Sandra, guess what, Ryan and I are going on the trip together, isn't that great"

The phone seemed to go dead.

"Hello, hello, ok"

Sandra held the phone out to Ryan.

Ryan snapped out of his trance as Sandra handed the phone back to him. Shaking his head to clear out the cobwebs, he just smiled at Sandra. “So let me guess my parents didn’t say anything, while your parents were probably super happy that you were going with me.” He said smiling at her, giving her a kiss after he got out of his chair. “Come on Sandra, lets get this trip started.” He said smiling at her, reaching for her hand. “You want to drive first, or what?”

Ryan smiled at Sandra as they left the mall. His parents never really said much to begin with. They were happy that he wanted to go on this trip, and were happy he was going to ask Sandra if she wanted to go with him, but mostly they were just concerned with their own life. Sure they spoiled Ryan something fierce, but they always seemed to want it to be just the two of them again. Ryan even overhearing a conversation where his mom was happy he was leaving, the two of them could get their crazy sex life back. Ryan didn’t hate his parents though, he was happy with them, he knew they loved him, and well he was happy that they didn’t try to protect him as much as Sandra’s parents did.

Sandra wondered why Ryan was looking at her so strangely but when he smiled she smiled too.

"Thats right, strange reactions from both set of parents. I don't get it, but you know what, I am not going to worry about it. I think you should drive until we get out of town. Dad doesn't think much of my driving and your parents would be offended to see me driving your car. When you get tired, I will take over, ok"

They walked out of the mall with all of Ryan's purchases in a shopping cart. Sandra held the cart as he stuff the things in the trunk. As they drove to her house she thought of how great this trip was going to be and smiled broadly.

Ryan unlocked the car door and held it open for her. She scooted into the passenger's seat and smiled at him as he stepped in and sat down.

"You know you are going to wear yourself out holding the door for me"

Ryan smiled and shook his head. “So what if I do Sandra, I was taught, or at least feel it’s right I should hold the door for a female, call me old fashioned if you want, but that’s what I want to do.” He said as they both were seated in the car. “So first stop your place, so we can pick up the bags, and well suffer from any last warnings or suggestions from your parents, and then off to my place, load my bags in the car, and be off.” He smiled at Sandra.

He paused for a second, an idea popping into his head, as he drove towards the exit of the parking lot. “You know Sandra, we can either drive across Canada or pop down into the states, and explore the west coast of the States some, and then just drive into Canada again, in Alberta and then go from there, we have two months, how does Sandra and Ryan Do America, and Canada sound?” He said smiling at her. “Don’t worry I won’t yet any crazy people from San Francisco or anywhere else for that matter lay a hand on you, unless you want it, of course.”

“So what if I do Sandra, I was taught, or at least feel it’s right I should hold the door for a female, call me old fashioned if you want, but that’s what I want to do.”

Sandra smiled at Ryan.

"Ok, Ok, you won, sorry I said anything, exhaust yourself if you want"

She laughed at her little joke.

"Yes first my house and then yours and hello freedom"

When Ryan suggested going over the border to the USA, Sandra got excited.

"Do you think we will have time, I mean we can't be late for your first day of University. I would love to go there, Ryan, yes, if your sure"

Sandra scooted across the seat and kissed his cheek.

“Don’t worry I won’t yet any crazy people from San Francisco or anywhere else for that matter lay a hand on you, unless you want it, of course.”

She giggled at his remark.

"Now you know I dont want that"

As they pulled into the driveway, her Mother and Father stood up, they had been sitting on the porch waiting for her and Ryan. When they went up the steps of the porch, her Mother pulled Sandra in the house.

"Darling, have fun, and promise me you will think about going to University, I want that for you. Oh and here, Dad and I pulled about $5000 dollars out of the bank for you to use on your trip"

Sandra was shocked, as her Mother pressed a credit type card in her hand.

"Just go to any ATM when you need money, put it in your pocket dear"

Sandra hugged her Mother and put the credit card into her pocket.

"Thank you, Mom and thank Dad for me too, please"

Mother and Daughter walked back to the porch arm in arm.

Ryan smiled at Sandra’s Dad as the two girls went inside. “You take care of my daughter, alright. I trust you, and she trusts you, which is the most important thing. Just make sure she stays safe.” Her father told Ryan. “I will, sir. You know I won’t let anything happen to her, she is my best friend after all, and I don’t want to see her get hurt any more then you do.” Ryan paused for a second. “And Sir, I will try to talk to her about university, but I won’t force her into something she doesn’t want to do.” He said smiling at him, as the two girls came back out of the house.

Ryan smiled over at Sandra. “So I guess we are off.” Sandra and Ryan said their goodbyes to her parents, and then they headed off to the car, and both got in, Sandra’s bags loaded into the trunk of the car. They waved as Ryan drove off to his place. Ryan just quickly grabbed his bags off the step of his house, and loaded them in, his parents nowhere to be seen. “So Sandra, you all ready to go now, your parents seemed happy to let you go, and you seemed happy after talking to your mom. So what do you say we head off, and well go into the states, maybe go to Seattle today, spend the night there, we have the time.”

Sandra smiled broadly, "Yes lets do that, do you know of a camping site there, Ryan?"

She looked out the window for awhile then turned to him.

"When your tired of driving just let me know and I will take over for you. Hey Ryan, where were your parents, did you say your good-byes already. My parents really did a full turn about, they seemed happy I was going. Hum, parents are really strange. Oh by the way my Mom gave me some more money"

She took the credit card out of her pocket and looked at it. It had her name on it, she wondered how they did this so fast.

"When we stop tonight will you put this card in your wallet for safe keeping, you know I don't have a purse"

Ryan smiled towards Sandra. “Sandra, I don’t have any idea where my parents were, they have been acting like that ever since just before graduation.” He said smiling at her. “How about I pull over, and let you drive at the next gas station.” He said as they were on the highway heading south towards the States and Seattle. They got through the border easy enough, and well they were on their way. Ryan pulled over at the first gas station, and smiled at Sandra. “Well your turn Sandie, lets she how you handle it. Its all yours.” He said as they switched seats, and Ryan handed her a ice cream sandwich he bought inside the store.

Ryan noticed the Credit Card. “Sandra, you already have money saved for this trip, and you told me that yourself. I don’t know where we can stay camping wise, around Seattle, so let’s just go crazy this first day. Spoil ourselves with a fancy suite, get yourself a whole new wardrobe celebrating your new freedom on life.” He said smiling at her. “What do you say Sandra, does that sound good?” He said smiling at her, wondering if she would agree to that, he knew she could use a good wardrobe update, the question was how sheltered was she really, was she going to break out of it now that she was on her own.
