Summer Movies Part II

Debbie Does Dallas - 2001 Version

Just Kidding

I haven't seen any summer movies, except the Mummy Returns. Thought it was good.

I did, however, rent Inspector Gadget with Matt Broderick and it was funny as hell and actually pretty good.

My mother enjoyed 'the Diary of Bridget Jones.'

I saw AI a couple days ago and there were a couple places in it that made me cry (maybe because i'm a parent). It's a pretty good movie for a slick Hollywood type production, you know?

It raises some pretty big questions, i think, regarding the morality of continued research into robotics and AI. We're not, as a society, going to stop such research, but i think the scientific ethecists have thier work cut out for them in this respect, as well as with regard to cloning. (You know, of course, that science is within 2 years - at the very outside - of being able to successfully clone humans, right?)

Anyway, go see AI. It's a pretty good movie.

Humans have already been successfully cloned; the first human was cloned 7 years ago. If I remember the article correctly it was done by a Scottish scientist - he cloned himself then waited until he 'knew the process was stable and complete' and dropped it into some liquid nitrogen and dissected it.

I wish I still had the article but it got tossed along with everything else when I graduated.

Ah! I'm guilty of narrow-minded and nationalistic thinking; i was referring to and thinking of human cloning in the US. Here there's so much uproar over the ethics that i am not at all sure any lab has, even secretly, preceeded much beyond the initial stages of insuring a cloned human cell begin the processes of cellular reproduction necessary to insure viability.

However, there's so much demand for such exprimentation, and so much real need, too (think organ replacements, at the least) that to doubt it will become Very Big Business in the very near future is blind. There's WAY too much money to be made on human cloning; it *will* come to be normal. The question is whether we're ready for the morality of the whole thing.

Already large parts of of the human gene code has been patented, if you can imagine that. Companies have mapped out huge sections of our genes and claimed all right to the development of medicines, for example, that use those bits of code in thier manufacture.

I think the whole field is totally fascinating.
We're definitely living in changing times.

saw Tomb Raider when it came out.
Dont expect anything other than good violent, bobbie jumping entertainment...oh and violence.
I however think the movie is great...okay I'm biased....I've been a TR fan since the first game (neener Complete all too except TR chronicles)
My greatest concern about that movie, was wether or not they were being true to Lara's attitude, and the game itself.
I must say, I worried needlessly. They got eveything right.
If you like action adventure a la, Indiana Jones. Go see it.

Also saw "A knights Tale" with Mistress a couple of weeks ago...dunno if that movie qualifies as a summer movie though....it came out in spring didnt it??
Anyway, I thought it was a very good movie. Again nothing deep or thoughtfull in that movie.
All good clean fun and humour.

Lists of movies I deem MUST SEE this summer is:
AI
Final Fantasy (and will see it in a couple of weeks with Mistress, Ravenloft, Valdemir_79, NS and NSW)
Pearl Habour
and well hehehe sue me, but Dr Doolittle 2

I'm going to see Artificial intelligence

Then the best fireworks in the World...

Scruffy says: see AI. It's Scruffy-licious. Jude Law and the Kid are very, very good.

Movies I wanna see

Final Fantasy
Tomb Radier,(ok, I confess, I like action, but mostly I wanna see Angelina Jolie.)
Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone,(GREAT BOOK!!!!!!)

Movies I've seen and recommend
Moulin Rouge
Schrek,(havn't been to the movies alot this summer.)

Haven't seen too many lately - other than DVD rentals - but did see Shrek and it was great!

I've seen Shrek, The Mummy Returns, and Tomb Raider... had a good time at all of 'em!

I plan on seeing A.I., especially after all the good things I've heard about it here at Lit!

I really want to see Pearl Harbor... I've always been interested in WW II.

Rent Leningrad Cowboys Go America...

Lol...Gotta' go...Happy 4th!...

I've seen Shrek and Dr. Dolittle, too, recently. (Have kids, go to PG and PG-13 movies;it's a linear, cause-and-effect kind of relationship.)

I loved Shrek. There were so many adult jokes tossed into that thing that it really worked for kids and adults. Besides, it's funny and the animation is incredible. Watch the grass blowing around while the characters are walking through fields - amazing. Watch the shadows. Incredible.

Dr. Dolittle was predictable. Still, Eddie Murphy is pretty good in it, and it had some good laughs. The first one was better, though.

I wanna see:

Final Fantasy
A.I
Planet of the Apes

I saw the trailer for FF the other day and the animation is top notch! Looks like a plot that could match any of the games as well, and if it does it should be excellent...

Also saw Evolution recently which was a brilliant laugh!
Anyone in America seen Croupier? A British movie which I recommend....I think it's a rental hit in america....

Lord of the Rings is out in Xmas....can't wait!

lol I wanna go too!! Dang all you people! hehe.

I want to see Final Fantasy, AI. and Planet of the Apes.

I finally saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with my mother: what a waste. I can't believe it hung at number one as long as it did.

Can someone tell me the point of that movie? And they're flying everywhere - constantly! When I watch a Kung Fu movie I like to believe that what is happening is somewhat real. It's like Superman's extended family to a trip to the Orient. I mean, even in TMNT the stunts looked real, even if there were preformed by giant mutant turtles.

And what was with that ending?

Oh, yeah, what was my point again? I know I had a reason to begin this post but I've forgotten it now.

I KNOW!!!!

CTHD IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME!!!!!!! Did they actually expect the audience to take it seriously? If it were a fantasy it would have been cool. Every review I read, or hear of that movie says that people were applauding during the fight scenes. I was trying hard not to burst out laughing.

Well - I rented Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and LOVED it. What was the point? A stylistic martial arts film with mystical underpinnings and a touch of philosophy with a twist of ancient legends.

Do they "expect people to take it seriously" - well, why should they? Do you go to to Tomb Raider and expect to take it seriously? Its escape-ism.

If Superman can fly in the movies, why can't they? How realistic are the Bruce Lee films anyway? Where do you draw the line between what's realistic and what's not? And why? Sometimes I think our opinion of a film often rests on the preconcieved notions of what we expected. I remember many years ago everyone going on and on about Beetlejuice and what an incredible film it was. It was all anyone could talk about. When I finally saw it I was very disappointed. It certainly didn't live up to its hype. I saw it again many years later - and actually thought it was pretty good. I expected TOO much the first time.

So - not specifically about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - but any film in general... how does anyone here feel the expectations affect their enjoyment? If you go to a film expecting it to be realistic and it turns out to have flying people instead, does that ruin your enjoyment of the film? Would your experience have been different if you went in with the expectation of suspending your disbelief?

I also loved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It was one of the best movies I have ever seen. The fight scenes were amazing and interesting. Much better than any other martial arts film I've seen (and I've seen alot). Plus there was an actual story too it.

I agree with Dillinger, who takes movies seriously? You go to most movies to get away from your own life and have fun. Unless it's based on a true story, I do think of it seriously.

I've ripped into CTHD a few times but I think the truth lies in the middle. It's like a 7 star movie that some people insist on calling a 10 star film and some want to rip it as a 2 star film.

The strength of the film is not in the action sequences(Anyone who thinks the fight scenes in CTHD were better than in Three Dragons or The Killer or any of Chan's films needs their heads examined) but in the performances. Yeoh is really good. Chow Yun Fat is also very good. From top to bottom(Welllll...I didn't love the actress who was the Princess but that may have been because I thought the character sucked) it was well acted with decent action. A good flick but not a great one.

I've seen..

Shrek and Atlantis (with my 8 yr old)

Atlantis has been getting horrible reviews so I honestly didn't expect to enjoy this animated film at all.. but surprise! I enjoyed it more than Shrek.

I want to see A1 next.
