I'm heading to San Francisco in a few weeks on a business trip. Will only have a couple of free evenings. Any suggestions on best things to do or see if you had limited time while there?

If you get tired of going up and down hills, take in the Embarcadero. It's not expected to last much longer, with the earthquakes and sea level rise.

I go shopping at Britex :) among other things.

Eat down at Fisherman's wharf?

When I am there, my evenings are usually booked with social events so I mainly do daytime and weekend stuff.

Yes. Haight Ashbury, the Castro district, Lawrence Ferlinghetti's book store, the garlic restaurant called the stinky rose, the Golden Gate Bridge, The Presidio, the suburb San Rafael.

If near Union Square, John's Grill serves Sam Spade's lamb chops for dinner, just like in the Maltese Falcon. It's an old time steakhouse.

Scoma's on Fisherman's Wharf. Yes, it's good food.

Irish coffee at The Buena Vista. Go for breakfast and have the corned beef hash and poached eggs and 2 or 3 Irish coffees.

The Whitechapel Gin Bar - the bar menu is 19 pages!

Brenda's French Soul Food - Oh, yeah.

Tommy's Joint - Pastrami on rye!

Thirsty Bear Brewing - Organic beer, eh

The Lighthouse Cafe - For breakfast in Sausalito on the way to Napa Wine safari.

Take the damn cable car.

Salt and Pepper Crab at R&G Lounge in Chinatown.

etc.

At the west end of Golden Gate Park are 2 huge windmills. One still turns, though it no longer performs its original function of pumping water; and I'm not sure of the status of the other, which had suffered some neglect. The functioning one, called the Dutch or North Windmill, is spectacular.

And, you're just a couple of blocks from the beach!

I second Thor with Irish coffee at the Buena Vista, it's fun to watch them make twenty at a time.

Be careful where you step, they crap in the streets and other public places in San Francisco.

At Tommy's Joynt [sic], it's got to be the Buffalo Stew.

No doubt, it's good.

When I was a poor student, I'd buy a couple of cooked dungies and a loaf of sourdough bread from a street vendor at fishermans wharf, and we'd have a picnic lunch on the grass in the park. Sometimes, we'd listen to "The Human Jukebox".

Are there any hippies left there?

The Summer of Love attracted a wide range of people of various ages: teenagers and college students drawn by their peers and the allure of joining a cultural utopia; middle-class vacationers; and even partying military personnel from bases within driving distance. The Haight-Ashbury could not accommodate this rapid influx of people, and the neighborhood scene quickly deteriorated. Overcrowding, homelessness, hunger, drug problems, and crime afflicted the neighborhood. Many people simply left in the fall to resume their college studies.[24] On October 6, 1967, those remaining in the Haight staged a mock funeral, Digger happening, "The Death of the Hippie" ceremony.[26] Mary Kasper explained the message of the mock funeral as follows:

We wanted to signal that this was the end of it, don't come out. Stay where you are! Bring the revolution to where you live. Don't come here because it's over and done with.[27]

After 1968, the area went into decline due to "an influx of hard drugs and a lack of police presence,"[28][29] but was improved and renewed in the late 1970s.[30]

If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. If you're going to San Francisco, you're going to meet some gentle people there.
