Jeez. I just read a post complaining about the harsh way some volunteer editors judge stories submitted to them.
I won't name names, because I don't wanna start a flame war. But my point is, butch up.
My ego isn't made of any more solid neutronium than anyone else's is, I'm just as vain as the next person. I want to see my story rise to #1. But the only way to do it is to face the toughest editors and let them nitpick your stuff to death. The more brutal they are about believability issues, punctuation, redundant wording, and all the other stuff that I've personally had to deal with fixing (and more), the more you're capable of honing your story into something more people will read (and in Lit's case, wank to).
Of course, you have to decide when an editor is giving you advice about poor writing, and when they are reacting to a lack of interest in a theme (my stories, for one, have background and plot, and they're long, too). But it isn't too hard to tell the difference between the two issues.
So suck it up and throw your story to the wolves!
