Subsrance

lavender

It isn't easy.
And it's a common misconception that the frivolous posts drive out the thoughtful ones. They don't.
The truth is most people would rather talk about the lack of serious topics than come up with one.

I agree Lavender, I'm even beginning to miss the trolls. (and no, thats not an invitation), so go ahead lavender..Post something mind blowing!

Where did our substantive posts and posters go? Not that these light-hearted posts aren't great, but the really great threads seem to have dwindled lately.

And damn, I spelled the thread title wrong, and don't think I can change it.

By who's standards? Yours?

Yes, Angel. That statement was about the posts that I personally find to be great. I know that they aren't the best for everyone. I didn't mean to start a battle over this. I was simply asking a question about the types of threads lately. Please don't get pissy with me for such a slight comment on my part. I didn't mean it to offend.

Um, I just asked a question. I'm far from getting pissy with you, or trying to start a battle.

Ok. Well it was by my standards, since that is the only think I know.

Okay.

Well alot of the threads that have dwindled out were discussions with people who are no longer here (Either at Lit or on the GB) or taking a break.

Personally I'd rather have lighthearted threads with little substance than the infighting going on recently. In my own little personal Literotica Paradise there would be an even balance between the two, without the infighting, but hey I guess we're human, and Paradise ain't happening. ;)

Come on folks! Let's admit the truth Dixon Carter Lee, Whispersecret and Madam Pandora are gone and they're sorely missed. All three spoke often and well on a variety of topics. They seldom offerred one line posts. They generally put forth well thought out points of view that became the beginning of sometimes contentious, but never dull threads.

There are still members who post with intelligence and wit but who don't spend that much time on the board. I love reading what cymbidia has to say, but she seems less present after the rather contentious BDSM thread last week. BrainyBeautry drops in occasionally, though not nearly enough for me. And where is Oliver Clozoff? I enjoy what you have to say Lavender but your passion seems most stirred by political threads that can get old after a while. As someone observed, they tend to generate more heat than light.

I don't doubt there will be a renaissance once the brittle feelings left from the recent brouhaha over trolls dies down. Your wish for more substantive threads is no doubt shared. Perhaps as the place becomes a bit more inviting some of the old folks will return, or some new folks will risk stepping in with something more than flirtation.

It's the cycle that Lit goes through every few months. Simple as that.

Renegade - As someone with nearly seven thousand posts you've probably lived through a few of these cycles. Watching my first one I find it a fascinating example of how we function in most areas of our lives. If we feel bruised or unappreciated, perhaps unheard, we invariably withdraw, whether physically or psychically from the source of our discomfort. We end friendships and relationships, we change jobs, we lose ourselves in booze or whatever distracts us. Here you simply walk away, perhaps stop posting while watching from the sideline, perhaps simply not coming at all.

We're not that complicated. Most of us would like our presence to be acknowledged kindly. For those people looking for a fight or hungry to put down others the engagement will be of limited duration. Pissing on one another gets old pretty quickly.

So we'll enjoy what there is to enjoy. That's not bad, even if for some of us it isn't very satisfying. But such is life and the Lit board isn't the only place to express oneself. Its just one of the best and easiest forums to use.

Things will change around here again. The basic cycle goes between the board being filled with serious threads and then being filled with mostly silly threads. You'll probably notice a few posters that haven't been around as much coming back and a few that were around a lot leaving. Give it a month or so and things will change again.

It wasn't that long ago that people wanted more serious topics and then MP, Deb, and a few others started shaking up the place. And then people were upset it was too serious around here, so the silly threads seem to be coming back now. It might take longer at times, but the cycles always change after awhile.

Yep. It gets serious, and half the people upset because it's too serious here - i.e. the latest troll controversy. It gets silly, then the other half get upset over the silliness - i.e. today. And so it goes...

If you take the threads and divvy them up by "serious" versus the "silly" threads on any given day, you'll find that there's about the same number. You'll also find quite a few threads that are neither. During the troll controversy, when I received complaints that "every thread was about trolls", I counted maybe 4 or 5 threads dedicated to trolls and dozens of others about music, politics, sex (imagine that!), cats, dogs, and food. The ratio of genuinely silly threads to substantive threads is very low, as is the ratio of fighting threads to substantive threads.

It's all how we see it. If silly threads annoy us, we're bound to notice them more. If pig-fighting bugs us, then the pig-fighting threads will seem to dominate the board. Etc., Etc.

Right now, we have so many intriguing posters, old and new, that I can't even begin to count them. It makes me sad when people leave, but the happiness I feel when meeting the new fun, intelligent posters. I think it's a big mistake to assume that "newbies" are less valuable than "oldsters". For every insightful poster that wanders off, at least one more insightful poster wanders in. The venerated "oldsters" of today were the maligned "newbies" of yesterday. Check the archives. You'll see that this is true.

Lavender - don't worry. You're not the first to feel this way, and you won't be the last. It doesn't mean that the board is taking a sharp turn downhill. It probably means that some of the threads which interested you died off, and you're having trouble getting sucked into something new. It happens to all of us, but it's due more to our perception than the actual state of the board. You're seeing the glass half silly. ;)

Being relatively new to this BB, part of its appeal is its lack of seriousness along with smatterings of serious topics and as you said above people get tired of pissing each other off. That probably accounts for the lack of serious topics as well.

But what do I know?:D
