One of the reasons why I abandoned Lit initally was due to the unfair voting. I put so much emotion into what I write that it hurts to give jealous, low-life internet scum the ability to affect our scores. And upon my return I'm seeing it again, some kind of protective curtain that they pull around themselves as they howl into the night for support.

There's so much more I can offer as a writer but I am disinclined to do so in such a hostile environment.

Can anyone help me set up a web site so I can post my stories for all too see?

I have defended Lit on many occasions. If Lit abandons me now then I have lost all love and respect.

Almost every story you have in your profile has an H next to it, and you are complaining about trolls? I'm sorry, I just don't it?

I'm not a fan of Lit's voting practices (nor it's stupid sweeps), but how will you generate the readers on a website that you can find here? You know you can disable voting or comments on stories...right?

Setting up a web site is easy, it just depends on what program you'd like to use (I'm fond of Frontpage, but some of the Web hosts have programs that are for the people with no experience). You just find a host who is affordable and you can set up everything through them. A lot of people around here use MySpace, but I've never messed with it.

Frustrated

I won't go as far as to apologize, because I feel like I have invested so much energy and imagination in my story. However, I will concede that I have overeacted.

But that doesn't limit my expectation. Don't worry, I'll crawl back into my hole soon, and make my stories available to those who might actually appreciate a plot along with the sex.

Lit scores are "coarse" at the very best and highly skewed at the very worst. They give the appearance of precision with those two digits to the right of the decimal point, but they are nowhere near that precise in any meaningful sense, and should probably be rounded to the nearest whole number, or perhaps half-number.

But the big picture is, in a rough-and-ready fashion these tallies of a self-selected and likely unrepresentative sample's subjective (and sometimes insincere) opinions really do perform a service for readers in separating the wheat from the chaff - those who do not know how to write from those who do. For all their flaws, scores generally distinguish those who can actually present readable prose, tell a story, develop some characters, establish an erotic situation, convey some feelings, pehaps describe some juicy sex, etc.

If you want to see what a site without this service is like go here and open one of the categories. Now try to tell which stories you might find worthwhile - there's no way. (The subcategories on that site are much better than Lit's categories, though.)

Also, S-Des is right about disabling voting - no one is required to play this game as a condition of posting here.

I believe all the serious writers here can sympathize with you, but at the same time, votes and comments can be turned off. I’ve been reading Lit for years and only recently decided to jump into the melee. I (personally) put a different light on the Trolls – I see them as the bulk of reading public, just like the real world. If everyone was an author who’d be doing the reading? As drastic and rude as some readers can be sometimes, that really (to me) reflects life. Hey, everyone’s entitled to their opinion (referring to the Trolls here).

:)

I have yet to see a website that has a "fair" voting method. I put fair in quotes because it begs the question, what is fair? Guess what, a certain percentage of people in the world are scumbags, and there is a percentage that are loud scumbags. In a democracy, or a vote-ocracy, that loud percentage will be sure to have their say and their vote.

If Lit wanted to fully revamp their voting system, and scare away a lot of voters, then they could go with a registered vote count, or even a dual vote count (one registered and the other unregistered). A registered vote count would mean that only people with an account can vote on any given story, and they can only vote once. Of course, there will still be people who will create multiple accounts so they can vote multiple times.

Kind of like the old saying, "Democracy is the best form of government, I say this because all of the others are worse."

Wondering

Is the H rating what all atention is focused on? And by the way, the missing H ratings are primarily due to the CSI stories that are rated "5" that never generated more that a couple of votes due to the numbers, so I should have more.

I won't apologize that I have higher personal standards.

There's no need to apologize, there's nothing wrong with expecting the best. I have 6 submitted stories and 3 of them have reached #1 in their categories. One has been in the top 10 all time of another site (all stories combined). I take a lot of time on each story (only one took less than several months) and often get annoyed at people who vote for stupid reasons. It's frustrating and I don't blame you for getting annoyed, but for me it's not enough of a reason to pull stories and go someplace else. Everyone should do what makes them happy, so listen to everyone's opinions, then make your own decision.

The H is usually a good indicator that people enjoy your stories. If trolls were a real problem they would probably all be rated around a 3 or even 2 instead of 4.5 or better.

And as it is, free voting is about as fair as it gets.

The only problem I see in your case, is your perception of what is going on here.

People are already prevented from voting more than once on the same computer. Possibly you could change your ISP and vote again, but I can't see anybody going to that much trouble.

I agree!

You know although I haven't submitted anything for a while - see my Writers Block thread for that! - I think that that voting system is all part of the fun of Lit - yes you can turn it off - yes you get trolls - but hey its a bit of fun! I really dont take it that seriously. If I have put a lot of my energies into a piece then thats for me because if I submit it here I know the rules.

Some of my stories I think deserve higher votes - some I am surprised got any! The fact that they are all (apart from one) above 4 amazes me.

Lit is what you want it to be.

You mean, the people that actually bothered to read your stories? Maybe you shouldn't post these gems that no one appreciates. Just keep them on your hard drive. Then internet scum would never be able to read them.

What did you think would happen if you posted a fictional story and invited comments? That your fanbase would spring to life and anoint you as the next Hemmingway? Are you a complete nitwit moron?

This is not a site for great literary merit. This is a site for romantic fiction, erotic romantic fiction and stroke stories.

True, because of the structure and readers' feedback, the quality of writing is better than other similar sites, try asstr, but the target is not high quality.

Anyone who is seeking to be recognized for their writing ability is in the wrong place. We are a bunch of guys wanting to hone our skills and, hopefully, write stuff that appeals to a popular audience - with a touch of smut.

If I had a fragile ego or thought I was the next Steinbeck, I would be starving in a loft somewhere, not enjoying myself here.

This is a playground; don't throw your toys out of the pram.
