Tres bizarre!
The "paddles" were stiff foam, not wooden. Being a cat owner (well, I own janey, janey owns the cat, but the cat _thinks_ I her too...), I could tell from her body language/posture that Kitty was enjoying herself.

That kitty clearly LOVES the treatment. She LOVES it. The red things are definitely foam as EG said, you can see them bending back. (I thought they were wooden at first too but my wife pointed out they are foam.)
