..... again. You know i'm no native speaker and I have another question regarding the wonderful english language.
I've come across a phrase and dumb as I am don't exactly know what it means. I've heard it a several times but can only guess what it means. The term is 'second-guess' (don't know if it's written like that) as in '....they will try to second guess you, so what....' or something like it.
Can anyone explain it to me? Thnx for any help, you guys are fantastic anyways. Don't have to tell you.

Snoopy, :)

It means to try to pre-empt what someone might do in a given situation.

I might second-guess how you'll reply to this. But I won't. ;)

Lou

P.S. I don't know what its origins are.

Well...

Damn.

Here I was going to glide in and post an insightful reply, wheni realised that I'm not exactly sure what it means either. I mean, I know in which approx situation to use it, but I'll be damned if I know exactly.

Ok, I know now. Thanks KatieTatieLouie :rose:

Ah, ok, I see. Thnx so much Lou. Oh and I don't need to know where it comes from, just needed the meaning.
Thnx

I'm glad I'm not the only person on the planet, though I think some people in southern Katmandu might have their problems with it as well, lol.

It's not a dumb question, Snoop.

Tatelou defined it pretty much how I would, but after reading what she wrote, I wondered why it's called a second guess, and not just a guess.

My pleasure.

Kewl, does that mean this thread's question has been answered? Does it also mean that I can use and abuse this thread now, for my own twisted needs? :D :p

Seems I enjoy making you blush. I can be a bit of a sadist, when the mood takes me. ;) :D

Lou

P.S. Liar, that all depends on how the evening goes.

Second guessing can also be used as a synonym for hindsight, knowing what would happen after the event. "I could've guessed that." That is: you don't see it coming when it happens but your second guess is spot on.

Having googled the phrase I see that it's one of Mr Bush's favourite sayings of the moment.

True, very true.

I had to pay the last time, erm... No, best not say anything more...

Lou

The second comes from "judging or criticizing with hindsight". According to the OED, Lou's explanation means to "anticipate or predict by guesswork".

Aha! Yep, that definition makes sense and clears up why that kind of guessing would be "second".
