Hey Folks,
I submitted my first story a few days ago, and haven't seen it published yet. I'm just curious if that's normal or not. If it is, what's the average time from submission to publication?

Thanks,
- DAndJ29526

Welcome. :rose:

That's "the" question around here. Depending upon the workload of the site owners the wait could be 3 days to a week, or longer, if it is in the middle of a contest.

Generally a frustratingly long time, especially if it's your first.

Good luck!

And the Winter Holiday Contest is currently accepting entries so non-contest entries will take longer than normal.

However the real answer is one day longer than an author thinks is too long, plus a couple of days if the cows are lying down and an extra day if it's snowing on the weather forecaster's roof.

LOL I understand.

Okay, so for the next dumb question. If I submitted a story does it automatically go into the contest, or do I have to submit it some other way to get it into the contest?

And even longer if you click on the "pending" button and alter anything - that usually sends the story back to the end of the queue.

It has to have "Winter Holiday Contest 2008 entry" in the Notes field.

See the first post in the Winter Holiday Support thread or the "sticky" - that's a thread that is always at the top of the Author's Hangout - about the Winter Holiday Contest.

The story has to fit the Winter Holiday theme and you must put a note in the "NOTES" field of your submission saying "WINTER HOLIDAY CONTEST 2008".

Yeah my story isn't exactly season specific, so I'm out for that. I'll wait it out, and hopefully people like it.

Thanks for answering my questions everyone!

The turn time for submissions also depends on how you submit. If you submit it with the cut/paste text method its quicker. I used to upload formatted Word file but eventually decided the extra days were not worth the extra days. One thing I did notice is that you need to make sure the line breaks are maintained when you cut/paste text to Lit. I've had files that were really screwed up when I pasted from a Word file that I normally write in. I "think" I caught most of them in preview after pasting.

Thanks for the tip.

Thankfully mine was written in a text editor with spell checking. (I use Linux - think Notepad with spell checking if you're a Windows user.) When I pasted it into the submission box everything looked the way I expected it to look.

Those weren't stupid questions. Everyone asks.

Welcome to the AH. :)

I am soooo glad you pointed that out. I thought that "stupid" modified "new author." As a new author myself, I wouldn't have thought the modifier necessary. Welcome to the AH, dan!

If anyone starts giving you smartass answers, just grin and play along.
