as most of you know (if only because i've mentioned it about a billion times in the last few days) i'm packing up to leave college and return to california for the summer. whenever i make this trip, from ithaca to san francisco or vice versa, i'm forced to take inventory of all my worldly possessions.

everything i own can fit into two suitcases and two 18x18x24 boxes. yes, i have two boxes of books in my grandmother's basement, but i will probably sell or give those away during the summer.

this is an interesting reality for me, especially when i see people filling minivans and trucks with all their belongings. my roommate has more than twice the "stuff" i do.

so how much stuff do you think you have? how much of it is essential? what could you give up while still being happy?

I've got a ton of stuff, and it all means a lot to me.

However, if I have my car and my dog...and my tent which doesn't take up a whole lotta space, I'll find home.

I've got too much stuff. I moved into my current house with two moving trucks AND a couple of car loads. Probably will take 4 moving trucks to move next time.

What can I do without? Probably everything exept loved ones (people and pets).

well when i moved from home to go to school....we got everything i owned into a Neon trunk and backseat. but now id bein trouble cause ive furnished my home and it took a long time for me to pick out everything....of course material objects arent inportant...but i do love my stuff lol. what can i say? oh ya and i couldnt live without every single pair of shoes i own! all 20! i need themmmmmmmmmmm! *wink*

i usually about every 6 months go through all my "stuff" and chuck away everything unless im 100% i want it ... all the maybes get thrown :)

Me?

Well - there's the ton of books... the over 1,000 albums. Furnature. Clothes. 4 computers and all the paraphenelia. Books. A half dozen synthesizers and samplers. Piano. Sax. Flute. Clarinet. A few trumpets. Guitars. Other instruments. TVs. Kitchen appliances. Books. Memorabilia. CD's. Several stereo set ups with speakers.

Did I mention books?

wow SG, you're hardcore :) have you done that since you were a kid or is a habit you picked up as an adult?

Very little...

I don't have many things, when it comes to clothes I can fit ALL my clothes in a large duffel bag , that includes bras, panties, socks... etc...

As for personal belongings all can fit into to 2 Gateway computer boxes * the ones with the cow print on them* :)

I could give up all my cds and radio and I would be happy.... along with what ever little jewelry I have... I am a very simple woman... I tell you.:)

We just went through all of our stuff and hauled off about 3 truckloads of things we were either tired of or didn't need/use. I like to do that about once a year. It's amazing how fast things accumilate.

I don't keep much stuff. Every year or so I go through this spring cleaning kind of thing I guess and I just throw or give everything I've previously accumulated away.

I only keep the mostest importantest things to me which is funny becouse people tend to think I'm very materialistic and vein. I appreciate quality items but that stuff is mean to be transitory.

Plus I have a tiny apartment.

i'm finding that i can do okay with a lot less "stuff" than i'm used to having. sure, i miss some things, and plan on getting some others, but i'm really enjoying travelling light for a change. (we won't mention the emotional baggage, but i'm working on that too.)

k, i think i make up for my lack of material possessions with all i carry around inside ;)

lol since i was about 12 ... i hate clutter ... i keep things that are important and that i want but everybody has stuff they dont really need

maybe the only reason i have to do it is because i hoard so much clutter in the first place and if i dont do the clearing out i'd have no room :)

sexy-girl, how much do I have to pay per hour to bring you over here to help me clean all my house full of stuff?

I'm a pack rat so I tend to have a lot of "stuff". I've got a storage closet loaded with boxes of books, hockey junk, closet papers and documents. That's just the stuff I tuck away!

I moved this past November..and rented a 14 foot Uhaul to do it. It was only for the bulkier items....I really didn't need all of that room.

Clothes took up three medium sized boxes. Books took up 4. One box took care of kitchen and bathroom items. A desk and chair. A dresser. An entertainment center. My guitar. My golf clubs. A box of CDs. Three boxes of videos and DVDs. My computer. My DVD player. A couple of boxes of files, pictures, and odds and ends.

I've since accumulated two TVs (bought one and was given one by a friend who moved), a stereo system, a bed (lost my bed in the "divorce"), a vacuum cleaner. A fridge (see previous note re: bed).

I know I could live without all the goodies...because it's not he who dies with the most toys wins.....it's he who dies with the best FRIENDS wins. And I've got 'em! :)

you'd hate me if i cleaned out your stuff i'd throw away things you "thought" you wanted but you didnt really ... i couldnt have lobito hating me so you cant afford to pay me that much :)

I can never move from this house, ever. I have just way too much stuff that I'd have to move after being here this many years. My family says I need to buy a bigger house but I refuse! I'm doing a sort of rotation basis now. Something comes in the door, something else has to go out.

One Large storage cabinet in my garage holds all of my "stuff" including books. The most part of it is books, but I also have other things, and mainly, they were all gifts, so they don't go out. While I understand the argument against clutter, my feeling is, if I have it, and I know that I could be forseeably using it in the next 6 months, it stays. Gifts, and valuables stick around becase gifts are precious to the heart, and Valuables are precious to the pawn broker in case of an emergency. The Books Do NOT get removed, EVER.

OH MY GOD!

:D That would be a neat trick, since I have no kids. But I have a lot of stuff instead!

I have lots of stuff and most of it is very non-essential. I was just thinking a few days ago that I need to start at one end and go through to the other end and start chucking stuff out the door. Sometimes it makes me feel so "loaded down". I have stuff from my parents that my siblings don't care anything about and I really hate to think about getting rid of that stuff but either my kids of sibs kids are going to have to take it. When I moved from Texas to NY several years ago, everything I owned fit in my car. Would love to get back to that point.

*Thinking about having a big yard sale*
