Hey all. I'm going to be writing a story that starts off in a strip club. What music is played there? Both the artist and/or style would be helpful. Links to any YouTube performances would be helpful as well.

I've never been to a strip club, so I don't know what soundtracks would be used. . .

Any suggestions. :)

Thanks,

Me, the RedHairedandFriendly one.

I suggest we hit a strip club some night, you know, like for research's sake..

Rick James, baby.

Or if it isn't, it should be.

The strip clubs I prefer play Bach's "Contrapunctus" or Mozart's arias.

And the women all look like Cindy Crawford and the beer is always cold.
.

I've never been to a stip club my friend used to have wet t-shirt contests at his club and he would play pour some sugar on me.

Having spent way too much time in strip clubs I've found it's often music popular with youth subcultures; Goth, punk, rap, metal.

Too often it does nothing to enhance the mood, as it were, but the women are comfortable with music they are familiar with.

Very occasionally you'll get a woman who has eclectic tastes. Then you might hear just about anything. And in that case it will add something to the show.

In my opinion.

It depends on the strip club and its clientèle. Some places seem to randomly play what's on popular radio, while others have styles they favor.

You'll get a lot of pop, rap, or music that contains sex-related words (like NIN's Closer). At classier places, I've heard a lot more music from stage shows (as the girls there tend to be 'failed' company dancers), or movies.

 Yeah, I spent to much time in strip clubs in my college days...

Okay... another question...

What would make a woman want to go to a strip club for the first time? I mean, like I said I've never been to one.

This person would be going because it is her birthday, she'll be with a couple of her girlfriends, and her boyfriend.

So what reasons can you see a girl doing this for the first time?

Curiosity

Curiosity would be my first choice.

Or maybe her relationship with her boyfriend is getting dull and she wants to spice it up by doing something a little kinky.

I did that in one of my stories. And the woman did end up in a hot relationship, with one of the peelers. ;)

I've done a couple of strip club stories and ya know, no body ever mentioned that I didn't name even one song. ;) Fast song, slow song, music but never a name. Make it hot enough and no one will notice.

I'm sure the song will be the furthest from the person's mind, but for me I want a song in my head, a couple even maybe.

You Can Keep Your Hat On - Joe Cocker

Closer - Nine Inch Nails

Minnie The Moocher - Cab Calloway

These seem to work for me. I recall good shows with these songs. :D

Oh, small point. Here in Canada the women do three song sets. One song clothed, one song stripping and one naked or nearly so. I gather it works that way in the U.S. as well.

Thanks Rob. :)

I don't know if it works that way or not, but it certainly sounds appealing as far as the story goes. I have a feeling there will be a lot of stuff going on in the strip club before I move folks from there to another place.

They're not strippers, they're dancers!

To prove something to her boyfriend? Curiosity is one. Because her boyfriend gave her a 'surprise' present. I was going to say 'lost a bet' until I saw the birthday idea.

You definitely need to do your research. :) HBO had a series on strippers awhile back now that I think about it.

Oh, and each stripper can have her signature song and get cranky if a newbie tries to play it.

Perhaps she's going on a dare because one of her girlfriends is a trouble-maker, or perhaps the friend is a closet lesbian and wants to make out with the birthday girl, or wants the birthday girl to make out with the stripper (excuse me, dancer) so she can make out with the boyfriend. Perhaps there will be a catfight? That would be cool.

A distinction here in Arizona - in establishments that serve alcohol, dancers must keep a G-string on, and they're prohibited from fondling the customers, but they do it anyway. In establishments that don't serve alcohol, the dancers strip naked. In both places, the 3-song format is fairly common. After a dancer does her feature, she cruises the room, looking for lap-dance customers, who pay anywhere from $6 to $10 for a one-song lap-dance. During the lap dance, the dancer strips down again. Funny thing is, they all smell the same - that fruity perfume you can't get off your clothes when it's time to go home. (Why do they do that? Is it like dogs, pissing to mark their territory?)

The music is bone-rattling loud, which makes conversation virtually impossible, unless you're really into yelling. And the places are dark, except for the stage, which is usually lit with dim colored lights and a strobe.

This is all from what people have told me, since I don't actually go to these places myself. Well, not anymore. Come to think of it, I'm not doing anything tonight...

(Daryl Hannah did a movie with 'Blue Iguana' in the title. It's about the day-to-day life of a stripper, done as a documentary.)

Hip-hop and hip-hop remixes, randomly alternated with rock or country. Pretty standard stuff.

My favorite routine was at one of the first clubs I went to. It had a tiny girl dancing (couldn't have been more than 5', 95lbs) to Mista Bone by Great White. It's more the girl than the song, but the keys tend to be a really consistent, driving beat and usually naughty lyrics (Crazy Bitch, Closer, Figured You Out, or name your Hip Hop tune).

If the song is to inspire you, then pick three songs you would choose to dance to. In most places, the dancers choose their own music and choreograph a routine to match. In cheaper places, dancers might have to improvise to whatever the customers have lined up on the jukebox, but the "professionals" don't usually improvise (on stage.)

I wouldn't name the songs in the story or quote from them, I'd just describe the action they conjure up for you.

I've never seen a place that forced the girls to dance to the customers selections, however I do know some girls who work at a place where they have to feed the jukebox all night (in lieu of paying the club to dance). Most places have DJ's and the girls give them a list at the beginning of the night to choose from for the evening.

As for naming the songs, in the story I did about the subject, I wasn't going to until my editor gave me some very helpful tips about how to do it and what to use it for. The result was very good, but it fit the specific point behind what I was trying to convey. Every situation is different.

Considering that it's been thirty-some years since I've actually been in a club with dancers, it may be a practice that has died out. It used to be fairly common in bars that "officially" didn't have strippers, just "go-go dancers" who suffered frequent 'wardrobe malfunctions.' Also, I suspect a consequence of not having the technology then to jump the jukebox queue for specific songs at specific times.
