Hi! Does anyone know if Lit allows strike-throughs in the text of stories? Like, will a word/phrase that’s been treated with a strike-through format correctly in a story that’s been submitted in Word?

Dunno, let’s try![strike]here’s the STRIKE tag[/strike] which is depreciated, and [del]here’s the DEL tag[/del] which replaced it.

Effects on the discussion board aren't necessarily the same as those in the story file. For example a [ here to mark coding has to be a < in the story file.

I'm reasonably certain that I've seen it in a submission in the past. As to it surviving when you submit via .doc upload, that's another story.

This is probably one of those situations where you should PM Laurel and ask in advance. Having the strike-through formatting removed would be very confusing for readers.

I tested <s>strikethrough</s> in a test submission and it did work for me.

When you submit, you preview before actually submitting so you can check if it works.. Regardless of what you think of your submission, I'd recommend going through the whole preview. What happened to me once was that a <i> occurred before a Lit page break and the </i> occurred on the next page. The italic wasn't closed for the whole rest of the story.

If it works in the preview, you can reasonably ( though not absolutely ) assume it will work in the final posting. There are a few bits and bobs that work in preview ( or, at least the old preview ) that don't come through in final posting. The character code for the diamonds suit, for one thing.

Laurel will sometimes remove tags that are technically allowed as well. I've had a blockquote removed from one at some point.

Best to add a note to the notes section and state your case for anything other than the three most common tags of italic, bold, and center.

The strike-through device wasn’t a key component of my piece, just an attempt to have some fun, make a bad joke and give the reader’s eye something different. I’ll probably, um, strike the thought.

Was about to point this out too. And considering that there's a decent percentage of readers that use the app (or so I seem to recall reading somewhere), and that a lack of strikethrough for one reader can dramatically alter how the text is read, I'd not recommend using it even if it would be allowed. I don't use bold for the same reason, and italics sparingly, and always make sure the text wouldn't be read drastically differently if that formatting was removed.

Good call. You’re right that it’s probably not worth the potential problems. In the end, the only device I used was italics, and just in places where the context wouldn’t be changed for anyone with formatting issues.
