Strength Against Trolls...

*bratcat* Applause! Standing ovation! What a great idea.

What are trolls on the internet??

I believe the phrase "troll" came about when various trolls would go "trolling" for attention in the form of heated responses and insults. They would do this by making inflammatory comments or insults themselves. "Trolling" came from the fishing technology of pulling a fishing line along behind a slowly moving boat - trolling for a fish to bite on the lure or bait.

People who trolled newsgroups and forums became known as trolls as it was a better name than fisherman or tollers, etc.

Good idea, Bratcat........Not to mention great avatar.
But, as pointed out by STG, they are only going to keep coming back because they prefer to annoy the intelligent members of the board. They will never be amused or entertained among themselves.

Well, some people are not normally trolls, but they may become a troll temporarily to annoy someone they are jealous of, or someone they are mad at - probably due to loosing a debate, or some imagined slight - who knows what exactly goes on in those neurotic brains of theirs?

I a msure there are number of registered members for this board who instead of doing the work of researching their topic, or learning how to debate, are just too lazy and resort to being a troll. Kind of their form of "you're a poopy head so there" - childish, but then that is what they are; children, regardless of age.

They will probably never grow up - so it is best to just ignore them like the misbehaving children they are. If I could give them discipline I would, but they hide like the little cowardly children they are inside.

The WWW gives this as a definition:

troll v.,n. To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies"; which in turn comes from mainstream "trolling";, a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.
The following extract is from a broader expansion of the defining comments given above:

In Usenet usage, a "troll" is not a grumpy monster that lives beneath a bridge accosting passers-by, but rather a provocative posting to a newsgroup intended to produce a large volume of frivolous responses. The content of a "troll" posting generally falls into several areas. It may consist of an apparently foolish contradiction of common knowledge, a deliberately offensive insult to the readers of a newsgroup, or a broad request for trivial follow-up postings.
There are three reasons why people troll newsgroups:

People post such messages to get attention, to disrupt newsgroups, and simply to make trouble.
Career trollers tend for the latter two whilst the former is the mark of the clueless newbie and should be ignored.

Exactly. I have trolled motorcycle news groups by posting about how shaft drive motorcycles cannot wheelie. It is an old joke that gets played on the newbies every six months or so. It is a lot of fun while it lasts.

As with the term hackers, trolls have morphed from something fun and innocent to people who post just to annoy and piss off people.
