Ken Masters was born into wealth, the son of an American hotel magnate and his Japnese wife. Raised in luxury, his father noticed that his son was becoming spoiled and undisciplined. Through his wife's family, he had Ken sent to Japan at age 12 to study karate under the famed Master Gouken. Training under Gouken changed Ken's life forever, introducing him to his best friend and rival Ryu, and his greatest love: fighting. Ken's confidence and fiery disposition meshed well with the young Ryu, and though it was a hard process, the young Ken learned not only how to fight but how to be a good man.

Ken and Ryu were both released from training at age 18, and left the dojo to make their own way. Ken returned to the United States, entering and winning dozens of martial arts tournaments before becoming the U.S. Martial Arts Champion. During this time, he met Eliza, a beautiful young woman who he fell madly in love with.

Ken returned to Japan to tell Gouken of his victories, only to witness his master's brutal murder at the hands of Akuma. Traveling the world in search of Akuma and Ryu, he found his friend in a state of depression, even after the two engaged in a wild fight. Ryu said he had a dark power inside him that threatened to take him over in battle, to make him win at any cost, even taking the life of his opponent. Ken gave Ryu the red cloth he tied his hair back with, saying that he knew who Ryu was, and that Ryu wouldn't give in. The cloth would remind him if his friend and of himself.

Ken then continued to travel, now searching for his own path in life. His journeys led him again to Ryu, who had been captured by a mysterious tyrant named Bison. The two friends fought Bison along with several other warriors and defeated him before parting ways once more.

After fighting in the second Street Fighter Tournament, Ken came home to his fiancee Eliza to face an ultimatum: Give up fighting or give up her. It was at this point that the invitation to the Madrid Tournment arrived. He felt torn, wanting more to his life than just fighting and training but valuing martial arts far too much to just give it up. It was a central part of who he was. Ken accepted the invitation, hoping that the battle will clear his mind and show him the right path. Plus, Ryu might be there and he needs his friend's wisdom. Unfortunately, the tournament was a trap by one of Bison's servants to avenge her master's death.

Returning home, matters with Eliza worsened until finally, she gave Ken his ring back, breaking up with him. It was shortly afterward that he received an invitation to a new tournament held in rural Thailand. Ken has not yet accepted or declined, but is now traveling on his own training journey. Partly to find his friend and seek his counsel, partly to avoid thinking about his ruined life, and partly to drown his feelings in the fight.

IC

Ken Masters stared at the muddy waters of the bay as the ship he was riding slowly pulled to shore. The normally upbeat warrior's face was dour as he reflected on the brown mess that the water was. It should have been blue and beautiful. But it was just muddy and messy. Perfect metaphor for his life right now.

Eliza. He closed his eyes, lowered his head to rest on his hands, jaw length blond locks covering his face. Why couldn't she understand? Why did it have to end like this? He'd never thought it was unreasonable to fight and have a life outside of it. He thought it brought him balance, protected him from falling into brutality the way some fighters did. Now all he could do was wonder if he'd just been kidding himself all these years. Maybe Ryu was right. Maybe...it was live or fight, and you couldn't have both.
