Hey ya'll...we have an issue here at home.
We purchased our first strap on last night and when we went to use it, it burned the va=jj. We washed it (again) with warm soapy water. It has this rubbery smell that is completely unappealing and I just couldn't wash it enough that the smell went away.
Is this normal? And does anyone have a suggestion on how to get rid of the rubber smell? And uh, perhaps that burning sensation?

What is it made of? Rubber? Jelly? Cyberskin-like stuff?

An easy fix for the burning (without getting rid of the toy) that should also help contain the odor during use is to use condoms with it. If there's any chance of a latex allergy, use polypropylene (plastic, non-latex) condoms.

Also, use plenty of lube (more than you think you need, as synthetic materials can 'stick' to those delicate tissues) and make sure she's not reacting to the lube you're using.

Time in a well-ventilated area is likely the only thing that will help the smell. Some toys are made from such vile chemicals that the smell is always really strong, though. Rubber ones always have some smell, too, although it's usually not that strong after it's had time to finish curing and breathe.

Next time you're considering a toy, you may want to save up for PURE silicone (make sure it's 100% silicone, not a mix of silicone and something else). It doesn't smell, is hygienic (vs. rubber, jelly and cyberskin, which are porous and can't be cleaned fully) and won't cause a bad reaction. It lasts a lot longer than other soft materials, heats to body temp quickly and is dishwasher/boil safe, too! The downside is pure silicone dildos are usually $50-100.

A glass dildo has those qualities and sometimes costs less, too. Just make sure it's supposed to be used as a dildo. :D

Thanks

The box says Jelly...100% Phthatlates-free. Whatever that means. Guess I need to go google.
Thanks for you help...although I hate the thought of using a condom...might just hafta.

That's good (it means it doesn't have the really toxic plastic softeners that may cause cancer and other health problems), but I'm sure it still has a lot of chemicals that can irritate sensitive tissues in some people. This could be an issue of a mild latex allergy, too.

I'm not allergic to latex and I produce copious amounts of natural lube, but I've noticed I really need to use extra lube with toys that contain rubber or when my partner uses a condom. Something about the texture latches onto any little bit that's not lubed well, then causes pain/burning. I'm sensitive to certain condoms and types of rubber, too...some condoms, for instance, cause major burning, no matter what, whereas other latex condoms of the same brand are perfectly fine (with extra lube, that is).

That's true, although I can't imagine using a glass dildo in a harness.
Why not? Getting fucked with a glass cock is a lot of fun. I even have one for my strapon. (Yes, guys can have strapons too. They're good for dp ;)) I don't see how it would be different from using a rubber or plastic one.

Glass?

Not sure I could handle a glass dildo...I'm afraid after getting fucked with someone that HARD, it might hurt...or even during. We're lesbians, not used to penis's and all that hard shit going in and out. Rubber is nicer.
But we haven't lost hope....we're going to try again and see if second time around is slightly less painful.
Oh, and we'll lube up to the hilt thanks to suggestions! ;)

Well, in my experience, glass would be nicer. With rubber, you need a lot of lube because it absorbs it. You could use a glass dildo without any additional unless you're using it for anal. The fact that you have to add lube pretty often unless you use a ton can be a real mood breaker. Rubber is nice for vibrators for rubbing on someone, but it's not as good for penetration as glass or plastic from my experience. (yes, I have around 35 dildos, so I have quite a bit of experience) As for it hurting, I haven't had any problem with anything like that as long as you take your time and relax. As long as you don't get too into it and get really over vigorous, it likely won't be an issue. I guess you wouldn't know, but a real penis is pretty hard itself other than the head. I can think of some pretty nice rubber dildos, but being a lesbian, I'm not sure if you'd be put off by them being shaped like cocks.

Of course, this is a strapless "strap on" designed by a lesbian. Just be warned that it is extremely expensive.

I'm used to a penis and I don't like our glass dildo. We bought one as an expirement, but it's too much for me. ....Just another data point.

As for burning, is the lube interacting w/the dildo? Sometimes some of them have a chemical reaction if used with the worng type of lube.

what's wrong with the glass one?

WHERE was it made?

If it says Made in China do NOT assume that ANY claim of being toxic free is true. There doesn't seem to be the resolve in governments to hold the Chinese manufacturers of stuff like this to their claims. It MAY say "100% Phthatlates-free" but nobody's checking so if you develop a nasty reaction and you are NOT otherwise allergic to rubber or silicone then one has to assume there is other stuff in there that you are reacting to. I have my suspicions about where they get rid of some of their toxic waste ...

Use a condom, it will help with a) odor, b) irritation and c) will extend the life of your toy. Jelly is porous; bacteria will get in, no matter how much you wash it. It's just more hygenic to use a condom.

What an incredible find! Thanks so much!
You're welcome. It is an extremely popular toy for women, almost up there with rabbit vibrators. I actually got the link, though from a friend of mine who's a straight woman, but likes to fuck her husband with it. :D

I find that the glass is just too unforgiving. It hurts me. And I like it hard and fast and a little rough. Maybe my pussy isn't as tough as I thought! ;)

Yep, it hurts bad enough when flesh or a softer toy misses and/or hits the wrong spot (like the pubic bone...oh fuck that's painful! ). I can imagine doing the same with a glass or metal toy during a vigorous fuck, and none of those thoughts are good.

Hard toys are better for slower, more attentive play that allows one to see or feel what they're doing, IMO.

Well, hard and fast isn't the only kind of fucking there is. I haven't had any problems with glass hurting anyway, though.

Silicone doesn't absorb lube - you just need to be cautious about using silicone lube with silicone toys.

You don't want rubber in your twat anyhow.

I'm a HUGE fan of tantus toys (they're the ones that make the feeldoe) and in my opinion, as someone who brings in under 1k a month, the money is well worth it.

Well, I've had silicone toys, but not 100% silicone, so I really didn't know. I just assumed since most rubber toys, including ones that are part silicone, like cyberskin, absorb lube and usually need more within 2 minutes or so unless you use a ton.

i used a dildo that burned and it was just that i was allergic to the material so my best advise is to put a condom over it it helps a lot and you still can you use it with out wasting money or use something that is phallite free(cyberskin is mainly pf).
do you know if she has a latex allergy or other allergy? if so hard plastic or glass is the best option. also be aware if you are using lubes she may need to use something like bare naturals from wet or the agape line from jo(have a friend who works in a porn store).
I really hope this helps some I had a reaction like that and know how it feels.

Ok.. I didn't read the whole thread 'cause well.. I'm mighty distracted at the moment.. but wanted to answer with what I knew.

Stay away from jelly toys!!!! I have bought a few of them and have that had that burning sensation. Use of a condom will stop the burning, help with the clean up. Either ensure that you use a condom everytime you use that particular toy, or toss it and purchase a less offensive one... silicone is nice, pricey, but then you get what you pay for.

Glass is interesting. I used to think I wouldn't like it, but have become addicted to them. *sits anxiously tapping my foot waiting the delivery of the latest purchase* Only my plug can be used in a harness as the others don't have a flared base, but it would definitely be something I might be interested in trying.

There is a harder *jelly* that doesn't seem to have that same problem. Don't know how to explain it... I have one.. it's clear with a centre core filled with plastic beads.. and it's fabulous.

Using lots of lube does help. Go to the store and handle all the toys. Open them and smell the toys, feel the toys. If it's very squishy, give it a pass.
