As every week day for the past three months, Tanya got on the train that took her from home to work. Changing jobs had been a difficult decision, and having to commute for about 40 minutes every day had almost made her change her mind. But her new job was fantastic, and she was slowly learning to make the most of that dead time. She had bought and eBook and took to reading again. She had never before read that much, and she was starting to love it. Sometimes, she would almost miss her stop if the plot was very addictive.
That is why she was so surprised when his voice made her raise her sight from the book for the first time. She was reading, concentrated as usual but his words “let me help you, ma’am” made their way into her conscious mind. She was never distracted by any sound, but his voice had something…
Then she lifted her eyes looking for the origin on the voice and fell for him almost immediately. He was not the kind of guy she would usually fall for. He was a bit chubby but muscular for his 1,8 meter height, and she had always dated slim guys. So in any other occasion she probably wouldn’t have noticed him. But something in his voice woke her from her reading trance, and she got more and more curious about him. So much, that she spent the rest of the train time secretly looking at him, waiting for him to speak so that she could hear that voice again and find out what was so intriguing about it.
But he wouldn’t speak again. He just sat 3 seats away from her, got a book out of his case, and started reading, just like she was doing some minutes before. He kept reading, also concentrated as she had been, until she had to get off and saw him for the last time.
Tanya deduced that he had got on the train at that very same station, as he took the book from his bag. Due to his clothes, she imagined that he was also going to work and that she might see him again. So everyday since the following day she rose her eyes from the book when the train stopped at that station she had seen him for the first time, and looked for the mysterious guy. But after months trying and never seeing him again, she eventually gave up, and always regretted not having talked to him.
So when she saw him again that morning, when she was walking down the corridor to get off the train, she froze for a second. Should she talk to him? Tell him that he had been in his mind for so long?
The man behind her in the corridor was pressuring her to keep walking, so Tanya did the craziest thing. Walked a couple more steps, and sat on the closest unoccupied seat. She needed time to think. She had to get off, or she would be late for work. But she couldn’t leave again without knowing more about him, who he was, where he was headed, why his voice had pinched her in that particular way. Her mind started working on the mishmash of ideas to try and solve the situation in the most efficient way.
