NYC also closes bars in which three or more people are seen dancing to a jukebox or a dj, unless that bar has the rare "cabaret license." These licenses were first mandated in the 1920s to keep whire people from visiting Harlem speakeasies where they would mix with black people, or at least watch the likes of Duke Ellington (many of these bars were segregated). Since 1993, Giuliani has fined and closed, at least temporarily, hundreds of bars at which undercover police saw dancing take place. This includes dozens of gay juke box bars, and a major club at which I was to have a birthday party in 1997. I have been reproved by bouncers for absent-mindedly vibrating my legs in well-known clubs.

? Does that count in *clubs* too? Cause I've been to quite a few in Manhattan where everyone was dancing with no problem.

Clubs have a cabaret license- but I've been in many bars where there is a sign posted that says "Dancing is not permitted". I felt like I was in the town where "Footloose" was set in.

Giuliani has, by bending the law and via brute pressure, criminalized most vice in our city.... Meanwhile, laugh at this great Victorian city.

And over the last few weeks I looked upon him as quite a man coping with the tragedy as he has.

I tend to think that anyone introducing laws that restrict sexual entertainment acts in premises especially licenced for that purpose has to have a fairly sick attitude to the whole sex thing. It's a matter of they know better than we do what's good for us and so we must foreit our pleasure.

Westminster Council in London have recently passed a bye law to clean up telephone boxes which were festooned with printed cards offering the services of prostitutes. The cards were quite discreet usually depicting a line drawing of a half clad woman with a telephone number and a message like "intimate massage available" added. Nothing over the top.

They have become so popular that they are now considered collectibles and some of the older ones command a small price for their purchase. But those in charge said no...

I wouldn't laugh at New York, I just feel sorry for all of us...
