Can anyone explain how the number of views on a story can be less today than two or three days ago? Also I've noticed sometimes the ratings vary from day to day while the number of views remain the same.
Thanks Dreamer

It's called sweeps. Every once in awhile the site sweeps away invalid or duplicate votes and the views that go along with them.

There is little known on what actually takes place during these sweeps as they are highly classified. I don't even think the NSA has a clue about what happens during a sweep.

I haven't seen views go down, only votes, but it does depend where you're looking at it. The counts on the "View Submissions" page seem to be current; counts elsewhere only get updated once in a while, so if you view the current count and then look at an out-of-date count it may look like it's going backwards.

Votes definitely do decrease during sweeps.

Your watchful pussy image also bears a strong resemblance to Naoko's avatar, not Laurel's. Can't keep your women straight?

I am not straight!

(Hullo, dahlink! I have not forgotten ;) Nothing exciting, guys, don't imagine you can come and peer through my venetian blinds and see us doing anything particular, lalala.)

BTW, welcome to the board, new poster! Don't worry if weirdness creeps into your thread, that's just us not you. Do not post in Loving Wives  unless you have a strong sense of humour, and whatever they tell you, there is no need to put up pix of yourself naked to post in here. There's somewhere-else where they do that, I am told.

The other thing about ratings is that it seems like once you make a rating, that's it. Is there no way to change a rating? I was surprised to see it's locked in, and I can't lower or raise it once I make it.

You can never go home!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. I know you can lock a rating, but usually your rating continues to go up or down as more people come in and read your story and vote on it. E.g., I posted a Chapt 11 and people went back to read my Chapt 1, so I saw two or three extra votes appear on it.

TBH, I didn't see the rating change, cuz there are so many votes that one or two don't make a difference. It must have changed a little bit, tho.

Did you mean you wanted to change something else about your story? It's your readers who vote and change the rating on it; there isn't anything you can do about it unless you pretend to be 10 different people and pop back to vote on it yourself - and that sort of thing gets caught by Manu cleaning the voting and swept out.

I mean that if I log on, read a story (any story, not necessarily my own) and vote on that story, than that vote is immutable. I can no longer change it. If I navigate away from the story, the vote persists, and there is no way to change it from, say, 4 to 5 or anything else. Is that how it's supposed to be?

If it is, do most of us that vote, vote right away, immediately after you read, or do you give it a few hours to think about how you want to vote? I tend to just fire off a vote immediately after I read. I either think it's a 5, or I don't vote. I'm not sure why that is, but that's how I've been doing it.

Also, just curious, is an author allowed to vote on his own story? I mean, I know I can do it, but is it something that is wiped in the sweeps? Is it considered poor form to vote for your own story? I will admit to waiting up and giving my story its first vote -- a 5! -- and then thinking -- it won't get any better than this! :) hahah, but if it's considered bad form, I won't do that anymore. I suppose I should have asked this question earlier, but it didn't occur to me that it might be frowned upon until I read this thread.

OK, Huck! I get you now.

That's right, you can't change your mind and say: "Oh gosh, I gave that story a 1, now I realise it is a peerless work of genius and wish to go back and give it 5."

Voting on here is very much a knee-jerk (or perhaps we might say crotch-jerk ;) ) reaction. If you go away, think about the story, log quickly back in and pop your vote onto it, Darkniciad (who is a total expert and you should worship every word he posts) said to me he thinks they come and sweep your vote off, deeming it likely to be one of the I am just running around hitting my voting button to do down my competitors and bump up my friends votes. He said if you go back to vote, leave the page open for a little while before you hit the button.

At least this means that those of us with lowlier ratings can say to ourselves: 'Huh, my writing is too good for the low-minded thrill-seekers on here.' :)

Sometimes it might make a difference if you put your vote in. Like I have stories with only 15 or 20 votes. But some stories have hundreds of votes, so it won't matter if the author cast one of them. Even if you have 15 votes, giving it a 5 doesn't make that much difference. Personally I don't vote on my own stories, partly because I keep an obsessive tab on how the votes are going. Like, I used to have these middling scores - because I got lots of 5s and lots of 1s. Recently, the 1s have disappeared and I'm getting 3s. I am really intrigued by that. 3 is still a good vote, but I'm interested that early on I just got strong reactions: I LOVE IT! or I fucking hate it, whereas now I'm getting a more: It was OK, I s'pose.

As a rule I don't vote my stories, mostly cuz I get so many ONES from Naoko and the others one 5 from me makes no difference. But I cant imagine any legitimate complaint against self-votes.

What I watch for are errors. My browser likes to score differently from me, and does if I'm not vigilant. And when a lousy story gets a 5 or a good story gets a 1, it cant be altered.

Simple answer: No you can't change a vote, it's locked in once you click on it.
