Sorry, emap. The only stupid idea I've been able to come up with is that the girls at the bordello are paid in food. "Will fuck for food." In the times you mentioned, barter was more prevelant than money. A farmer may have plenty of wheat, but no money.

Of course, not every customer is a farmer. The dress maker may give them clothes. (Not sure how that works with your heroine being nude the whole story) The tinsmith offers cups, plates. The glass maker offers to fix a broken window.

Back to your story, because of the economic hardship brought by the blockade, the men of the town aren't visiting the bordello as often as they used to. Without the import of silk and cotton, the dressmaker has only a burlap coat to offer. Without the tools the farmers need to bring their goods to market, the town starts getting hungry.

The women at the bordello are among the first to feel the pinch. Maybe the most popular girl there (not necessarily your heroine) finds herself feeding the other girls, but none of them are getting a full meal.

I'll admit, I'm not very informed of 16th century economics.

My bad, I wasn't focusing on the one thing I actually wanted ideas on. The how bad things in town are getting is easy enough, I need ideas on how to show how bad the guards and dictator are, more guards but dictator thoughts are good to.

That's easy. They used to extort free fucks as a protection racket. In these hard times they prefer to free food to free bed as payment for not wrecking the place, or even closing it down.

Oh your silly, a dictator won't starve his own people, just the people he's oppressing. Staying alive is rather tantamount to such people and not feeding his own troops is a very good way to end up not alive.
