I'm curious to know where other writers get their inspiration from when writing erotic stories.

I've written a handful of short stories but these have been almost like a form of release when flirting with a friend has gone a bit too far and physical intimacy isn't an option. This usually means my stories end up as being written wish-fulfillment.

Do other writers find their stories are mainly use this sort of inspiration or more like 'I did this amazing thing with my partner(s) and so I'm going to write a story about it to anonymise it all'? kinda thing?

Neither of the above. My stories are neither real nor my personal fantasies. They're stories.

The inspiration can come from any number of places. The last story I posted was inspired by a panoramic view of the desert as I drove home from a weekend in Payson, Az. I started with a view, put people in that view then told those people's story.

To quote NotWise: 'My stories are neither real nor my personal fantasies. They're stories.'

I'm sure that I borrow - from people I know or people who I have known - but, by the time that I start writing, the characters are their own people. The best ones totally surprise me. And just because I often use the first person, don't assume that that first person is me. :)

Fantasy, wishful thinking, nostalgia, plain old horniness, all made up, part truth, whole truth, part fiction, real people, imaginary people, dreams, memories, stream of consciousness, moments in time....

All of the above. Generally my stories will have a tiny snippet of truth somewhere in them, to a greater or lesser degree, to provide some veracity and to act as a pivot around which all else spins.

Interesting... So it's more of the craft itself of creating a story and seeing where it goes?

Pretty much. I rarely have an active plot worked out, most of my stories take a turn somewhere that I didn't see coming; or a character develops that I really enjoy writing about (writing for) - and I want to see where she goes next - almost always a female protagonist. I usually fall in love with them as I write them, I reckon.

Stories come from all over. Sometimes I have a journal or history to dramatize and inflate. Much improv there. Sometimes I have a clever idea to try. Sometimes I plot-out a tale, or start with an ending and build a setup and story to fit it. Sometimes I create a setting, characters, and some plot points, then let the players work out the action and consequences.

Many incidents are real-life stuff; most characters are based on real people. Sometimes I compress several real people into one character or split one real person into several players. Often I take a real person and play "what if". Suppose they hadn't died young or otherwise gone away, or been willing, or...?? How might relationships have worked out?

The genres I write have little connection to my own fantasies and interests. I write incest bt don't read or fantasize it. I know the F&SF I write isn't real or possible or even desirable. I write about fetishes that don't tempt me. Sometimes they're writing exercises, puzzles to be solved: How do I fit implausible elements together into an amusing story?

Does personal wish fulfillment creep into my stories? Probably, here and there. But you may have a hard time separating my fantasies and your own.

As others have posted, it's not that restrictive. Ideas come from all over and people have a lot of different approaches to getting into writing a story. Don't sweat it; just do it and you'll find your own grove unless writing just isn't your thing. And if not, just try golf or painting instead.

To me, it's sort of "all of the above".

I've written non-fic for a while (not professionally, of course), mainly blogging. I'm mainly learning how to write stories that people would enjoy. SOME of that is wish fulfillment, sure.

I keep thinking until I think, 'That would make a great story.'

I try and find ideas that are arousing and fun.

However you gain your inspiration, it's gotta be good.
wish-fulfilment can be a trifle problematic, I think, so don't make it too realistic.
:)

Most of my stuff is based on scenarios that turn me on personally. One is a story of real events.

I think the only two that would fall under wish fulfillment are my two erotic horror novels where a bunch of asshole men are slaughtered in gory fashion by a woman they wronged.

Should be the fate of every rapist and committer of domestic violence.

Ok, I'll admit it. All my stories are true. Even the one about being a thief and sword fighting the devil with this beautiful naked girl. I didn't actually have a sword sword but i used what I had.

:D Stories come from everywhere. People, places, things, Things you see, things you hear, things you think you see. A picture is worth a thousand words. Bullshit! I can get 20 or 30 thousand at least out of a good picture. Case in point the story in the opening paragraph.

Writing is also a good way to get the voices out of your head, voices out of your head. Is there an echo in here?

I got two story idea from that last sentence alone.

"PLOT BUNNIES FOR SALE"

I have too many plot ideas. In a single day I could generate a hundred or so without conscious effort.

If I sit down in front of a keyboard and start listing ideas I could be there for hours. Many of my ideas that turn into drafts are for those people who like my fetish stories but anything can start a story, even Chairman Mao's Little Red Book.

Inspiration

I just start with a character and fill in the world around them. What happens to them is not planned for the most part. It's when other characters start interacting that it becomes interesting. I watch it in my mind and then write it. For me, the truth of the story is the dialogue and I work hardest on nailing down what and how the characters say. A fantastic plot in a beautifully described scene can be easily destroyed by out of place dialogue.

Most of my stories start as a single thing, which could be a character trait, a history of a character that I think could be interesting, a place, an event, even an object sometimes. When I find something that I feel like could turn into a good story I start building from there. Just start filling in the blanks until I know enough to start writing, I'll figure out the rest while writing.

I start with something I observed or know of, and I follow with WHAT MUST BE TRUE FOR THE EVENT/OUTCOME TO BE REAL? HOW DID IT HAPPEN? I scout for amateur videos that confirm my hunches. And then I construct stories around the methods and madness.

In recent times I posted a tale about how a mom comes to fuck her son.

My hunch is he got hurt, couldn't use his fingers for sexual relief, and she freaked out when the home health aide fucked him. Sonny refused a male aide, so mom took over the bathing etc. and responded when sonny got aroused. It got 60,000 views in no time.

Mostly from a certain muse I have. If anyone reads my stories they might notice my characters are always similar.

Also a friend will sometimes send me a synopsis and ask if I can write a story about it. Or she'll send me a picture.

And sometimes it was a wonderful dream I had that I want to continue.

For my intruder story that happened because my friend was home alone and heard a noise. She said she had a hockey stick and wasn't afraid to use it if she had to.
I said that is a good beginning for a story!

Same with another one I started. She lives in an apartment and was complaining about someone pet sitting that was being loud at night. I thought, that could be a fun story of how two people meet.

Ditto. That's why I waste my time on Story Ideas. Churn-em out, watch-em grow or die. Easier than nurturing them myself.

Bit of everything. Sometimes to explore incidents in my life (though usually not the "I just had fantastic sex" kind). Sometimes dreams. Sometimes as a response to something else I've read.

The last story I wrote was a healthy (or unhealthy, depending on how you see it) mix of both: deeply personal and fulfilled wishes (big time). So far, it's the only story to incorporate either, but it's certainly the one I'm most proud of.

Everything else I've written and the majority of the ideas I have for future stories have just been moments of "Oo! That would be fun to write." And, so far, it has been. :)

Part personal, part wish fulfilment.

I write as a character that is a more brazen, confident and quixotic version of myself.

I guess the next question would be if a character is a more brazen and confident version of yourself does that mean that you're writing an 'idealised' version of yourself?
If so is there any reason why you don't/can't actualise that version yourself in reality?
