I've been working on this idea that I hope to get some feedback on.
I got this idea of a man who has money troubles so he sells his marriage to someone else. I don't mean he's loaning her out for money or turning her into a whore and making her fuck for money; but I mean he sells the marriage to another man who wants her as his wife.

Do you think this idea could work? If so, do you have any ideas on how to go about it?

...

When I tried that with a girlfriend she came back saying that I now own her because I obviously couldn't have sold what I didn't. That she was unsellable like the proverbial horse of a gypsy, was of course a beautiful piece of female logic.

It is a unique idea, I'll give you that. But if we take it at face value, the man who sold his wife now has no wife. So where is the sex?

The only way I see a story happening is if you follow the wife and the dude who bought her. That might have some interesting possibilities.

There are court records, I think, showing this actually happening in the past. 19th century London, I think. Can't remember now where I read that.

The Mayor of Casterbridge - Thomas Hardy 😉

Oh yeah, I remember that book, haven't read it since high school.
But unlike the book, I don't think I want to the character to get drunk and sell his marriage.
I was thinking more like he had financial problems and was offered a way out if he gives up his wife and sells her to him, or something thereof.

I like the concept of the idea, but looking for advice on how to go about it.

....

Maybe the husband and the wife are really, really poor. Like, can't get enough to eat poor. Set it in a Dickens type era if you have to. But they really love each other. Nevertheless, they only way they can survive is for the husband to sell the wife to a rich dude. The wife gets fed by her new husband, and the husband now can afford to buy food.

But... they still love each other and have the hots for each other. So they have to sneak around to make love, in back seats and back alleys and anywhere else they can get away with it, and hope that they don't get caught.

Cant see how it coulld work, unlike loaning or having to temporary give her away, selling would mean totally gone and surely she needs to have a say in it,marriage is a50/50thing,unless both are unhappy in there marriage and both need to be single again

Such a thing actually existed in history. Kings and nobles could divorce, but a commoner could not.

The problem was that at that time, from a legal perspective, the husband was responsible for his wife and had to answer for her. Even if she now lives with a new man. (even if all parties involved agree)

That was the reason for selling wives in the market. It was the little man's amicable divorce. The new man officially bought the wife, and thus took legal responsibility. And the community watched, thus witnessing that the "divorce" was consummated.

So why not a story about such a "divorce" and the not-so-historical erotic consequences? (consummation of the marriage, and consummation of the divorce, and the husband's new companion).

Unless it's the gypsy horse selling scam of course. In that, the horse is trained to run at first opportunity and return to the original owner.

With a girl it becomes a bit more complicated. The appearance is made that it's indeed intended to be all in and forever, but unfortunately it simply doesn't work out, so she leaves or even manages to be run out. But it's in no way the guys fault, so he keeps the money.

I kind of like this idea, I think it's something I can work with.

That's a lot like "The Good The Bad and The Ugly." Clint Eastwood captures Eli Wallach, wanted for murder, and turns him in for the reward money. Then, as they are about to hang Eli, Clint shoots out the rope, Eli escapes, they split the reward money, and move on to the next town he is wanted in.

It works great. Until it doesn't.

In a variation on the theme I had a concept of a scene.

Onboard a huge business jet somewhere over the Pacific a young engineering prodigy John is seeking a deal that could make his world changing technological dreams true. Pavel, a Russian guy with probable hand in organized crime had brought John in contact with a shadowy east Asian gentleman Mr Wang, who ostensibly has an outstanding influence in the industry John seeking entry. It is Wang's supersonic jet they're onboard. The talks aren't really going anywhere, until...

John had recently found unexpected success with girls and currently has two girlfriends with him. Mandy however is more (or less, depending on interpretation) than just a girlfriend, she's solidly moving more and more in status of a business partner. Annie on the other hand is a pure playgirl, a classic blue eyed blonde, and submissive to a point John find it sometimes uncomfortable with handling her special needs and offload some of that to Mandy. Yes, they both enjoy her very much, and had trained the previously shy girl to be quite a brazen exhibitionist. Even now, she's wearing a very elegant almost nothing.

... until Mr. Wang takes John aside, and offers him a stake in an upcoming chip foundry against, yes, miss Annie as she are, as a slave, offer effective until they land, not to be mentioned afterwards.

John discuss it with Mandy and quick napkin math indicate the nominal value offered for Annie's enslavement probably exceeds $1.2 billion, before all but guaranteed revenue stream is taken into account, and almost more importantly for John, it gives them access to laboratories and staff crucial for his project. Then, those two guys are quite obviously criminals and Wang may want to offload the factory because of geopolitical insider information. And, they are talking about selling their girlfriend in slavery, possibly literally her life. But just maybe the girl may even enjoy it, both being sold and a true Master.

Yes i know in history it was common, kings would marry off there daughters for land, politics, alliances, they were like tools to barter with and they had no say in it.maybe there might be a way ito make it work in a relative way now but the story would need to make sense,i like putting myself in stories,if i dont think it makes sense i wont read it

What if it wasn’t just one guy. What if it were a society where marriage certificates were sold and traded like mortgages are today. Maybe men hope to buy a marriage with a more sexual wife, while women put their paper up hoping for a more handsome and wealthy man. Maybe this is done instead of divorce.

The story could be about the hopes of a man and woman, and what they each get when the deal is done.

A very kinky PTA (or Private University, or Hospital for the whatever). Affluent and bored suburbanites organize a charity auction where "services" are sold to the highest bidder. Bob and Dave, a plumber and a roofer, had volunteered their services but were seriously outbid when Heather and Linda's husbands walked them into the school gymnasium.

(Don't worry, it was way past the kiddo's bedtime.)

Walked them into the gym-- on short leashes because they were blindfolded-- wearing bright red lipstick, black "fuck me" heels and lace panties, and unbuttoned sheer white blouses. Lai, the sexy vice-principal, joins Heather and Linda, as does Maria and that new jungle gym is paid for with money left over...

I know a few of my friends who would gladly sell their husbands or at least trade them in on a newer model. Lol

Sorry just had to chime in.
