Have you ever had a story that was written from things happening in real time? I don’t mean that you’re literally telling your own story necessarily, but that real life events are inspiring the story.

I wanted to share my experience with this. The Islands in the Stream story was inspired by a real life situation for me, and the subsequent Tangled Web series was generated out of that as well.

The problem is…

Real life changes and shifts.

So, what I had lots of energy, ideas, and a drive to write died on the vine. In part this happened because the real world circumstances changed. Have any of you experienced this?

I feel somewhat bad for the readers because I have a series left unfinished which I was progressing rapidly at first. I would like to finish it for them. But I have literally ZERO drive to do so.

If you’re curious on the story which I am referencing here it is:

Not personal events for me, but I was writing Statuesque in “real time” starting on June 13th 2023 (although, I’m a day ahead of Washington DC, due to time zones).

Things were going well until the Wagner Group started a coup against my main antagonist (June 23rd). My story almost died on the vine, too, but resumed in July. I just wrote in the break as the 4th July holidays.

So I agree that real world events can either inspire or deflate your enthusiasm.
