Story edit question...

I'm new to the boards, so I apologize for the potentially novice questions, but never-the-less, here they are.

First, a little background. I am the author of the Lindy Series and when I originally wrote the first few stories, there were meant to be one-offs. However, I got tremendous feedback from here and other boards I've posted on, so I opted to expand the story. In order to truly give the story depth and future storylines with the same characters, I needed to remove the incest aspect of the story, but leave everything else in place (i.e. the watersports content, hermaphroditism, etc.). So based on this, here are my questions:

1) If I edit a story to remove a specific component (i.e. incest), does that make it a completely new story and not an "edit"?

2) If said edit constitutes a new story, how would I go about removing all the existing versions so I can republish the new story in its entirety?

I've already published the new version other places, so I'd like to do the same here if possible. Thank you in advance for your advice!

Cheers,
PTW

If you use the edit process, the only thing that changes will be the textual changes. The votes/views/comments/date of posting will remain the same.

If you want to completely remove the old version, start a new submission using the same title ( or as much as will fit ) plus something such as *DELETE*. Do this for every existing chapter to reduce the chance of human error.

Then, in the notes section of that new submission, explain that you're deleting the series in order to re-post it with a major element removed.

Fill in every other section with placeholders. I would copy the "notes" section and paste it into the "story text" section to fill that entry.

Once the deletes process, you can begin submitting the new versions. May as well take advantage of the time you've had to spice up your description lines, focus your keywords, and maybe even change the title, if you've thought of something better.

The new versions will then appear on the new story lists, with none of the votes/comments/etc. of the old versions.

You might want to put a note at the beginning of the first chapter ( or each previously existing story for unnumbered sequels ) explaining to readers that it's a repost to remove a story element that was holding you back from forward progress. If you don't, there's a good chance you'll get a lot of low votes and nasty comments about "I've already read this before!", and perhaps even accusations that you plagiarized it from someone else.

@RejectReality: After previous edits for the first two chapters had been accepted, I realized I really needed to do much more than just grammar and continuity edits. I did a major edit and submitted those also, but the "pending" edits suddenly vanished from the view page and no changes were made to the story. This is what led me to wonder if removing an entire component still qualified it as an edit.

Several people have favorited these stories and I had hoped to just edit the text and name as I'd done before, but with no feedback from the reviewers as to why the latest edits were simply deleted, I don't think I have a choice but to delete them all and repost.

Thank you again for your help!

The edits never were made? I've seen in advice given here, that editorial changes take an unusually long time to take effect.

What SR said. You have to wait at least 24 hours after the "edited" submissions vanish from your private author page before checking.

The site is behind a cache wall, and it takes that long for things that have been changed in the database to be visible on the public pages.

How long is "unusually long"?

Honestly, I have no clue if my latest edits were approved since there is no feedback and a delay for them to go live. My previous edits, however, were live less than 24 hours after being approved and its been more than 24 hours now, but I can certainly wait longer if you think I should.

I've seen Laurel say up to 48 hours, though in my experience, it's always been just shy of 24 hours.

Every single page of a story seems to be updated in the cache independently as well. I've had long multi-page submissions where the changes had been applied to page 1 but not to page 4, and then an hour or so later, the changes appeared on page 4.

If it hasn't been at least 48 hours yet, I'd give it at least that long, since that's the official word, but I would expect you to see them much sooner.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but there are also URL changes pending for the stories I had also submitted edits for. Could that have caused a problem?

I've heard of it taken a few days--longer than if it were an original submission (which is generally two days before posting currently).

I finally see the edits! Thanks for the advice, Gents.

The other issue I have is with URL changes that are still pending after several days. I assume those take a long time also?

That one I can't tell you. I've never used the url changing feature.

I would suspect that the change would show up on your private author page ahead of it changing on the public side, though.

I would agree, so I'll just keep checking it. I just submitted the final edits for the last of the existing stories, so I'll check back in about 3 days to see if anything has changed.

Thanks again for the help,
